How about these positives:
Most healthcare for all but royalty for most of humanity has been administered by followers/ preachers of the predominant religion in the area.
Most religions started as rules to live by to avoid causing "displeasure to the one" which is why one had to wash hands before eating, not eat food like pork or shellfish, or to put aside resources for later.
How about the fact that religious people give you atheists someone to feel superior to?
"Atheists aren't intolerant of religious people, we are intolerant of religions." Thank you for proving that the religion of Atheism is as bad as any other.

Dave, Looking at your Sunni Shiite analogy, there is one flaw... There will ALWAYS be a way found to cause hate. Take a look at any conflict, there is an underlying reason. You talk about Northern Ireland, and how if there were only no religion, there would have been no war. Consider that the protestants were allied with the British and were fighting to become part of GB, while the catholics were of a more nationalistic flavor, and wanted independence. Religion was a reason, yes, but don't try to sell the conflict as one caused by religion.
And by the way, true belief in an unprovable is fanatical and wrong; be it a god, or in the refusal to believe in a god...
