Baphometa, this is a question of some controversy. Giant pandas are in the same family, Ursidae, as bears, but a separate subfamily, Ailurinae, in which they are the only species. Black bears, brown bears, and polar bears are all in the Ursinae subfamily. The red panda is also in the family Ursidae, but it is considered to be more closely related to the racoon. I guess it's just a matter of semantics.

OldOllie, Not sure where exactly you got your info but Panda's ARE bears to be more specfic they are a member of the family tree "Ursidae" which is the branch of Mammals classified as bears....
