The reason another ball was there was probably because they were playing in pairs, as usually happens at golf tournaments to speed things along. That was most likely a short, par 3 hole, which wouldn't be too difficult to both get a ball on the green. Therefore, he was obviously the second player of the pair, and so it`s very possible, if improbable. QED. :D

Many years ago in my home town, this guy bladed his shot off the tee, hit a wooden "Please Repair Your Ball Marks" sign on a tree behind the green, and bounced it back into the cup. His name was Digby, so to this day, whenever anyone hits a bad shot that turns out well, it's called a "Digby."
