It seems to be like the writer wanted to take a different route with the story. Evidently Gretel missed her brother, Hanzel, and had to lure him back to an old tree to remind him of their previous relationship. Maybe it`s based on a different version of the tale? Brothers Grimm perhaps? I don`t know much about the darker side of fairy tales.
