Anyone know why some of the ladybirds have like black and white areas on the back of their heads and some don't? Is it a sign of sex and, if so, which one is male and which is female?

Gosh lady bug swarms are disgusting. I once rode my bike through one and I had them flying in my eyes, mouth and nose.
