This is complete c*ck. My boss sticks his entire arm in the LN2 tank to check the level. The rest of us take frozen eppendorf tubes out of the nitorgen with our hands (I usually wear latex gloves, if it is a hot sweaty day sometimes they freeze). Boll*cks to the "I am an expert" bit as well, anyone can do this. The fact that people don't know this is that the world is too full of credulous morons who get all of their science (and history for that matter) from Hollywood, which is nearly always wrong.
