feverdream: i pay for the food as well. the tip is what i give the waitress for serving the food and being a mediator for me and the cook. when food takes forever, its not the servers fault, its the cook. so, with that said, the waitresses job isnt to just serve food but be an ambassador for the kitchen and keeping the waiting customers happy. if she doesnt keep me happy, no tip. if she does and does it well, huge tip."
Absoloutely right, it's meant to be a little reward for doing the job well, like a bonus. If the kitchen roosters up, it`s my job to keep the customers happy.

Ive made just above minimum wage for most of my life. Mostly i've worked bars, and tipping is rare. I might make a pound extra. There`s not a lot of point, and this only happens when i really put out. So, whats the point? If you want to go to college/uni, then go! You can work your way through it, and make enough money, ok you`ll be streached thin, but you can do it.

"A waiter's base pay is only minimum wage."
Waiter`s do not get paid minimum wage in most states in the U.S. The average base pay for a waiter is $2.15 - $3.45 an hour + Tips. They literally depend on your tips to survive.

Tipping isn't just about the waitress or whomever getting extra money it`s also about the person tipping. Tipping can make you feel superior in some ways and you get the feel good factor of helping out a fellow human being....aawww Also as Old Ollie said it stops you getting spit in your food which has to be a good thing nes pas?
