The globe is covered by three US patents and the disclosures show how it works. It is powered by photocells and it contains a bar magnet that aligns with the earth's magnetic field and a motor that rotates the bar magnet. Since the magnet stays aligned, the rotational energy is transferred to the enclosing globe.

If they were magnets and oriented themselves to the poles, the globe would stop spinning once it oriented itself. I'm guessing that`s not the case...
