its cool and ridiculously simple!
the main weight (hammer head) hangs directly underneath the very end of the ruler, so past that point the weight is minimal and the ruler just needs stabilising, and the hammer handle does that job nicely. also the string will have to be almost vertical

!!UPDATE: I was wrong, physic is a word, it just means something much, much different from the common usage of the word "physics". A physic is a medicine used for purging; a common example being laxatives.

That said, in a certain sense, "physics work" is a correct sentence, in that laxatives do typically deliver on their intended purpose. It's just not a phrase you would really want to use in this particular context.
