The equipment to play American Football is very expensive, so 2nd/3rd world countries could never field a large number of teams. Children grow up in most places across the world with very few sports to play, outside of soccer.

Just the equipment for 11 players on a US children`s football team can cost 3 to 5 thousand dollars (not including field costs, etc).

An organized children`s soccer team can pull the same thing off for much, much less money.
