i'm not sure about how it works in america, but in australia, it is illegal to run your car on anything that you don`t buy from a petrol station as you arent paying excise on the fuel.
it is technically tax evasion to run your car on vege, peanut, baby or any other type of oil. part of the price that you pay for fuel is taxed to pay for road upkeep as a way of making people pay proportionally to the amount of driving they do and therefore roughly proportionally do how much damage their vehicle does to the road.
And its not hard for someone that is looking for it to catch you... your car will smell like slightly burnt fish and chips.
Top gear (or 5th gear, im not sure which) did a thing where they drove a diesel mercedes from one coast of the UK to the other and it worked like a treat apparantly.
