It's a cult...people subscribe to it when they are most vulnerable and it seems like a panacea for a weak mind. A large part of scientology has been/is composed of ex-cons, ex-drugaddicts and the like. People at their lowest points...ready to latch onto anything to return their lives to "normalcy"
Scientology is based on secrets. Secrets which you have to pay for...those "devout" in the "church" work, eat, sleep and breathe scientology. The compounds around Clearwater are topped with barbbed wire and this is a safe city.
Like I said, I live in Clearwater so I have many friends who work with or are related to a scientologist. I`ve heard many stories from first hand accounts. Compounds in the southwestern United States that are militia training grounds. No joke kids. These same people who tell me the stories are scared too. They don`t let you out with proper payment and a nondisclosure statement!

"You all need to lighten the F|_|CK up. Ever hear of tolerance? Or does everyone who is different scare you? That's pretty sad, but then again, ignorance and intolerance do rule the world.
Don`t agree with someone asking for peoples money, and getting it? DON`T YOU GIVE ANY, THEN! If they want to waste money then it is their problem. The thing is, they believe in this stuff, so to them it isn`t a waste."
Google `Operation Freakout` and `Operation Snow White`. Also take a look at Lisa McPherson.
Scientology is not only a religion, but a dangerous cult that extorts the members before killing them. It also has tried to kill anyone who dares to expose the truth, even stealing government documents.

Scientology makes you sign contracts saying that you give your soul to the "religion" for 1 billion years, give over your house and money, and that you have to disown anyone who does not believe what you believe
