Venus Fly Traps Vs. Yellow Jackets: Who Ya Got?

Submitted by: holygod 6 days ago in Science

Normally I don't like animal death videos. However, I was stung by a swarm of yellow jackets as a child. How are your stingers working now mother f*$#ers?

A few items that may be of interest:

  • Venus fly traps live in nutrient-poor soil. They counteract this by extracting from their insect prey the nutrients they'd otherwise be missing.
  • Each trap requires a significant amount of energy to grow and operate, and each trap turns black and dies after shutting and digesting prey about five times. The traps are costly to the plant, but apparently the value of the nutrients gained outweigh that cost.
  • In order to conserve energy, the traps' trigger hairs have to be touched multiple times in quick succession. Touching one trigger hair once won't do anything, but touching three will. (You can see this in the video when a yellow jacket will touch a trigger once and nothing happens.) This prevents the plant from wasting precious energy by snapping traps shut in response to raindrops.
  • It is believed that the plant also doesn't secrete digestive enzymes unless the trigger hairs are touched after the trap has closed. That is, something has to be struggling inside the trap for the enzymes to be released. If there's no struggling, the enzymes aren't released and the trap reopens after just a couple hours.

Fun fact: The only place you can find venus fly traps in nature is a tiny section of eastern North Carolina.

rammo34 Worst of the "Flying Yellow Stripy Things" by far.  Hopefully they start screaming ultrasonically ala "The Fly" once they realize they're trapped.
