Transatlantic Commission On Election Integrity

Submitted by: boredhuman 1 week ago in News & Politics

NATO, EU and other democratic countries will go to the polls in over 20 elections before the US Presidential Election in 2020, giving multiple opportunities for election spoilers. Yet, governments and institutions have yet to provide an effective response to this growing challenge.

This is why leading figures in politics, tech, media and business are joining forces to launch a Transatlantic Commission on Election Integrity (TCEI).

Working with political and private sector leaders, and the media, the Commission will fill a void in transatlantic coordination, identifying and plugging gaps and raising awareness from governments to citizens; and it will look into the level of risk exposure across Western countries and ask how technology can address the problem.

Here's the 25 minute keynote speech by Biden at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit 2018. See other speeches, Tony Blair and a Panel discussion that includes Mexico's Felipe Calderón and Canada's Stephen Harper.

spanz In your humble opinion, who are the prime experts on Russia's interference in foreign elections? Don't be shy, name names!

Can I start you off with Vladimir Putin?

A smart Republican will be on board with that. They would know that election interference swings both right and left. I am sure the Russians would love to compound the Trump presidency with nationalist Europeans and a democratic house.

boredhuman How do you mean meddling? Giving moneys to people that we hope will support Democracy?  Supporting groups that are fighting against strong men and dictatorships?
If you listen to Biden's speech he talks about protecting the world form Governments and people that are trying to undermine the democratic way. Stopping the selling of power by persons in government.
He does not talk about any meddling in foreign elections by us. At least not in the way the Russians have been accused of, by physically interfering with hacking and delegitimizing one party or the other, or both by social media.
And to answer your question is meddling in foreign  elections a joke to me?
Yes,    because all the most powerful countries do it in one form or another, the problem is not meddling its what our government does about it.
You know like Obama who know that the Russians were interfering with the last election and did nothing about it.

casaledana "Giving moneys to people that we hope will support Democracy?  Supporting groups that are fighting against strong men and dictatorships?" Yes, and yes! Both are examples of meddling in elections.

"He does not talk about any meddling in foreign elections by us. At least not in the way the Russians have been accused of..."
Why would he talk about it?! Wait, are you accusing the US of meddling in foreign elections by hacking and social media? Evidence please.

"meddling in foreign  elections a joke to me? Yes, because all the most powerful countries do it in one form or another"
Well, it's not a joke to powerful countries when others do it to them! Can you clarify: do you believe that Russia could not have affected US presidential election in any significant way?

"the problem is not meddling its what our government does about it."
Congratulations! You understand what TCIE is about: what can governments do to safeguard the democratic process from foreign meddling, specifically Russia's meddling.
So, what should Obama have done?
What is Trump doing about the meddling?

Side note, what do you call the Farmers bill 10b in taxpayers dollars to fight off the tariffs?  That's Socialism, just socialism you agree with.

normalfreak2   Well in some case this could be called socialism, but considering that the Commodity programs that cover loss of revenue due to price lose is only about 4.8% of the hole bill, and 67% goes to Nutrition which is the government paying for food for the poor, you know food stamps. And we won't go into the ramifications of that. Then there's gov. supported insurance 7.7%, but we know that they do that for lots of things like flooding and the like.
You know I think it's a good Idea for the government to help secure our food sources, and the farms are still owned by the farmer and not the government and you still have to farm or at least own one to collect any moneys. That is unless your on welfare that is.
So yay, it could be called socialism but mostly its so you can eat and not have to pay your entire paycheck for it.
These stats are from the last time this bill was passed in 2014 (Who was prez then) and has been passing in one form or another sense like 1930.

But among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents? Fully 57% say they have a positive view of socialism, while just 47% have a positive view of capitalism.

'As Gallup's Frank Newport put it, "the drop in Democrats' positive views of capitalism this year has for the first time left Democrats more positive about socialism as a concept than about capitalism."  "recent Gallup poll."
Lets not forget the  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,Cynthia Nixon who belong to the Democratic Socialists Party I believe its called.

casaledana Side question if you don't mind subsidies for food why are subsidies for Healthcare any different or less vital to you?  You know Medicare for all or anything similar to what every other major modern country has.

normalfreak2   I have never said that the needy should not get aid. When they no longer need it, it should stop, and it should never accept under the most extreme cases be permanent.
I have known personally families that have survived on welfare for three generations. How much is enough, how much is to much. Lets just take 75% of everyones money in tax, take over all personal property and divide it evenly. Would  that be enough? and when the system begins to collapse because no one will feel like they want to work, take a close look at countries that have tried to live this dream and see how it comes out. Like Russia, China.
If the food system collapses no one will need health care.
