Open Forum Friday, Christopher Columbus Edition: October 5, 2018

Submitted by: squrlz4ever 1 week ago in Misc
In the United States, Monday, October 8, is Christopher Columbus Day. In observance of the holiday, here's a set of three videos that discuss (1) Columbus the man; (2) the consequences of Columbus's voyages for not only the Taínos, but also the Europeans; and (3) the Columbian Exchange.

In Canada, the same date marks Thanksgiving, which occurs several weeks earlier than America's version. Here's wishing all you Canadian IABers a nice long weekend and plenty of good food with family and friends.

ATTENTION IAB'ERS: Please make all further OFF comments on the new "420 OFF" board. IAB boards tend to get sluggish and unresponsive once the comment count hits 420 or thereabouts. For that reason, we've created a second Open Forum Friday board to keep the party going.

Thanks for understanding, and we'll see you all there!

We may need a second Open Forum for Sunday too :-)

Here's what a real Progressive looks like:

This is not abnormal, and is widely supported by other progressives to boot. (get it? Boot? Lolz!)

daegog When I studied Inferno years ago it always struck me that Dante had a bit of a soft spot for lust. Francesca's confession is really rather tender;

[Francesca]: "One day, to pass the time away, we read
of Lancelot – how love had overcome him.
We were alone, and we suspected nothing.
And time and time again that reading led
our eyes to meet, and made our faces pale,
and yet one point alone defeated us.
When we had read how the desired smile
was kissed by one who was so true a lover,
this one, who never shall be parted from me,
while all his body trembled, kissed my mouth.
A Gallehault indeed, that book and he
who wrote it, too; that day we read no more." (Inf. V, 127-138)

woodyville06 How about heresy? It's hard to say what is a sin. We have only the word of the church.
The Roman Catholic Church recently determined that Limbo does not exist, after centuries of shaking down parents of unbaptised dead children to get the souls of the babies out of Limbo.
Now the Pope is flirting with the idea that Hell may not exist. Another pope invented it, so he has that authority.
(Ask me sometime how I achieved enlightenment in a buddhist temple in Kitakamakura.)

semichisam01 Oh, the've settled the limbo thing have they? Last I heard ( a few years ago ) it was kind of a "well, maybe".

It was a nice little earner in it's time; even the poorest of peasants would scrabble a few coins together to pay for baptism.

LordJim "Alleged" abuse... she has utterly failed to prove a single word she said, including the word "the" ok? You seem highly selective in your demands for accurate language... only when it suits your dogma it seems...

Her testimony was riddled with lies, fabrications, un-provable allegations and utter nonsense. The people she said were witnesses did NOT support her, including her BFF who Ford now accuses of being mentally challenged (or something).

And he was a minor at the time: you think YOUR childhood should be held against everything you ever do for the rest of your life? Really now?

You could take a time machine and check me out day by day and the worst you will find are poor fashion choices and bad poetry. Literally no-one I know did that kind of shit in High School or Uni. I don't buy this this " Oh, well, we all did that kind of thing, didn't we guys?" No. It happened, yeah. Happens still. But only by very bad people. I have no idea what your history is in this area, but please don't imply that I share it.

scheckydamon Falsum in uno, falsum in omnibus.
At common law, it is the legal principle that a witness who testifies falsely about one matter is not credible to testify about any matter.
Kavanaugh lied repeatedly under oath. That does not prove Ford's case, but it undermines his own.
That is a statement of fact.

It is possible that she lied, but we cannot know because 'The White House' prohibited the FBI from interviewing witnesses.
We know that he lied, because he directly contradicted written information widely available.

Male 2,551
semichisam01 Sorry but no and no. The white hose turned the FBI loose. The White House does not tell the FBI how to conduct investigations. The DOJ does that. A few people said Kavanaugh drank , and he said he likes beer, but none of Ford’s people corroborated her statements. So again we the people, both sides, did not really get what we wanted.

Male 1,642
scheckydamon The president has the authority to set the parameters for FBI background checks. I understand that Trump claimed that there were no restrictions, but that was just a typical Trump lie. It's what he does.

Kavanaugh was asked the meaning of a number of things in his high-school yearbook. The meanings of these things are well-known to most high-schoolers today. He lied. He said many times that he liked beer. Witnesses who were not interviewed claimed he also liked hard liquor and drugs, but we will never know the truth about that, because the FBI was not permitted to interview them.

Kavanaugh claimed several times, reading from a prepared statement, that his drinking was legal in High School because the drinking age was 18. The fact is that the legal drinking age at that time was 21, and he was 17 until February of his senior year. I don't care, you don't care and the Senate doesn't care if he drank illegally 36 years ago. Lying about it now makes me a little nervous.

None of the witnesses for Ford were interviewed by the FBI. That was one of the things prohibited by Trump.

::added later::
We're all getting into the weeds here, and none of us has the whole story. Kavanaugh has been sworn in as a Supreme Court Justice. How about we put this on hold while we watch to see how it works out?

semichisam01 Ford lied too, under oath, in her depositions, she lied her ass off.

What lies did Kavanaugh tell? You'd THINK the Democrats might have MENTIONED them if they existed in places other than your imagination, eh?
Unfortunately for your kind? Laws aren't based on such progressive ideas as "guilty until proven innocent" or "accusation = conviction". He doesn't NEED to prove anything, he's innocent and that's a fact until proven otherwise. So your 'statement of fact' is moot, meaningless, propaganda & bullshit.

Of course the dehumanization campaign against Kavanaugh has totally warped your world-view. You now think a man is guilty until proven innocent: for shame sir! I had expected better from you...

Show it. Simple. Reputable source. Now would be good.

 the dehumanization campaign against Kavanaugh

I would dispute that It showed him to be very human, just an unpleasant kind of human. The kind you would not want your sister to associate with. And you know that is true.

This was not a trial so just drop that guilty until proven innocent. It was testimony about fitness for office. What I saw from Kavanaugh was petulance, snivelling, self-pity, dishonesty, spite, and an utter lack of dignity. Not fit for any public office.

If it’s an opinion, your statement should include “ l think” in it. To the letter of the law what you said is slander. Everyone here knows I’m conservative and also that I feel everyone’s entitled to their opinion. But your comment is exactly why he is now sitting on the court bench.

marsii Again you’re pulling a monk. You stated he was a rapist. I asked you, personally, to prove it. You can’t. I didn’t ask you to tell me what CBS said or NBC said. Had your comment been “ X said he’s a rapist “ I would have gone past your comment. Buy you in no uncertain terms declared him a rapist. I don’t watch tv but I read websites from both sides the make up my own mind. I occasionally will pipe up like I did here but I’ve learned to not beat my head against the wall because certain people, you being one, will start the circle jerk and not respond to a question or a statement. Let’s sent your comment to a lawyer of your choice and see if it fits the definition of libel in the public forum. That’s all I’m saying. Till the days we both die will will never see eye to eye politically but that’s OK. We don’t have to. But we do have to share this world we call IAB. As to grab her by the pussy? Yup he said it. It’s on tape. Was it a good thing to say? Nope. But I dare you to show me where you’ve never made a stupid comment. You, and I both can’t make that claim. Did anyone come forward and prove he did that. No they did not. That also was not in your original statement.     “ I wouldn't count putting a rapist on the high court as a victory but you can learn a lot about a person by what they do consider a victory.”

gohikineko You may want to attempt a bit of introspection and humility, because you have demonstrated quite convincingly to everyone here that you are not adept at evaluating information. Everything from your politics to climate change -- you believe the "evidence" which confirms your biases only.

Not that you are the only one who does this. We all do it to an extent. But you certainly do it quite...pervasively.

So I recommend that you just chill, take a step back, and think honestly about how you process information.

We've had many constructive conversations where you have shown insight and solid thinking, so I know that talent exists in you.

This current thread is not one of those times. You are blowing odd steam, but at the cost of doing harm, especially to our female users.

'Course, I'm no one to talk -- I got banned for posting obscene content. I guess if ya can't be a good role model then be a loud warning.

How bout we try the latter.

I examine all the evidence, form my own opinion and express it. I need not check with "the elite" (like liberals do) to find out what is "allowed" or not, unlike HG accuses me of, falsely, yet again, based on his imagination, yet again...

Blowing off steam is BAD NOW? Holy cow! The rules of the progressives fascists change hourly don't they. No wonder your kind is so jumpy all the time.

You do know that 1984 was a dire warning, not a guide-book, eh?

gohikineko Yes, by thinking. Try it sometime.

You need always check with whatever view you are most adverse to considering. That is how we uncover bias.

You have been tricked into divisiveness, into parsing the situation into "left" and "right" camps. Where never the twain shall meet. Who benefits from this division? Who benefits from keeping a populace divided? Is it you? Is it me? Who benefits? Who has the most to lose if those with less succeed in organizing?

What you do not understand simply because you do not live here is a historical lesson painfully taught:

The Vietnam/Hippie lesson. A lesson the US government learned from, adapted to, and built strategies against. Strategies designed to prevent unification.

I'm taking a coffee break from sharpening chains and getting equipment ready to go. I'll be out in the woods every day for at least the next two weeks, if the real rain holds off long enough.

Saturday.... or as I call it LASAGNA DAY
I made the sauce yesterday, it takes a day, today I make LASAGNA!
or as I call it .... food heaven!  I'll give you my recipe

Sauce:
1 # sweet Italian sausage
3/4 # hamburger {no one sells 3/4 pound so just put a pound in}
1/2 cup minced onion
6 6oz cans tomato paste
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1    28oz can crushed tomatoes
2 6.5oz cans tomato sauce
2 Tbl sugar or fake sugar
1 1/2 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp fennel seed
1 Tbl salt {I use Accent but some people don't like msg}
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1/4 tsp pepper
2 Tbl chopped fresh parsley
2 Tbl chopped fresh parsley  {2 in sauce, 2 in cheese}

16 oz Ricotta cheese
3/4 # mozzarella cheese
3/4 cup grated parmesan

Sauce:
Cook the meat and drain the fat. Mix everything together and heat on medium heat.
Once hot, reduce heat and just let this simmer as 2 hours or longer. The longer it
simmers the better the flavour. I leave it for 6-8 hours then refrigerate and use the
next day.

Lasagna:
Boil the noodles and dry them on a towel. Sauce clings to dry noodles better than wet ones.
Mix ricotta cheese, 2 T parsley & 1 egg
Preheat oven to 375°f
assemble
1 cup sauce in dish without the cat
arrange 6 noodles
ricotta cheese mix
mozzarella cheese
sauce
parmesan
Repeat
If you have any cheese left over dump it on top

Cover with foil {to prevent sticking spray foil with Pam}
bake 25 minutes.
remove foil and bake another 25 minutes
Take out of oven and set for 15 minutes before diving in with a fork and having a food-gasm

FYI, the current version of Robocop (1987) on Amazon Prime is the "X-Rated" version unreleased in the 80's.  I just watched it last night and it was glorious.  There was only about 60 secs of gore cut from the film, especially during the part where Murphy bites it.

Side Note:  Robocop was the first R rated move I snuck into when I was a kid.  I remember it vividly.

IAB Question of the Day:  What was your first R rated film you snuck into?

Draculya I like the idea. Here are some data points you might find interesting. Over the past six months, we've logged 118 moderator actions. Here are the top five accounts appearing in the log, followed by the number of entries and the percentage those entries represent out of the total.

1. monkwarrior: 29 (24.6%)

2. rumham: 21 (17.8%)

3. buckeyejoe: 11 (9.3%)

4. lockner: 7 (5.9%)

5. dm2754: 6 (5.1%)

This list is crude because it's not taking into account the severity of the moderator actions: Bans, for example, are being weighted no more heavily than Requests for Self-Edits.

It also doesn't take into account how cooperative or difficult the users have been. Some people are quick to take the correction and easy to work with, which saves the moderator a lot of time; other users get nasty or cop an attitude, which means the moderator can lose 30 minutes to an hour or more interacting with the user and working to prevent a difficult situation from becoming worse.

Still, it's interesting to note that just two users -- MonkWarrior and Rumham -- account for more than 40% of all the moderator actions over the past half year.

monkwarrior Actually, I'm totally down with this. No need for a sarcasm tag.

There are currently three IABers for whom CUI'ing has been a serious problem. (No, I'm absolutely not naming names here; please don't speculate or ask.) Much like texting while drunk, Commenting Under the Influence is almost always a mistake.

My advice, which I really wish people would take, is this: If you're drinking, log out of your account and surf the site as an unregistered (non-commenting) visitor.

End rant. Thanks.

How would you say we've been doing on the content lately? (Anyone feel free to chime in.) Not enough? Good posts? Bad posts? Too much of a particular topic? Not enough of a particular topic?

Unfortunately, I've been so preoccupied with moderation issues that I haven't been doing much in terms of processing or submitting content.

Also, how do you think IAB is doing lately in terms of moderation? I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts. Too much moderation, not enough? Good calls, bad calls ... pro, con, praise, scorn? I'm all squirrel ears here.

A 30 year old guy goes to the doctor for a check up

After running some labs and checking vitals, the doctor asks the patient some questions.

Doctor: How often do you drink?
Patient: I've never touched the stuff.

Doctor: What about tobacco use?
Patient: Never tried it. Never will.

Doctor: Do you use any recreational drugs?
Patient: Oh, of course not!

Doctor: Do you engage in unprotected sex or one night stands?
Patient: Not at all.

While the doctor is taking notes, the patient asks, "So doc, how long do you think I've got to live?"

The doctor replies, "Why do you care?"

A Chinese man and a Jewish man are sitting next to each other on a plane

They make polite small talk and then sit back to wait for takeoff.
All of a sudden, the Jewish man turns and delivers his neighbor a swift kick in the shins.
"Yeow!", yells the Chinese man, "What was that for?"
"That was for Pearl Harbor!"
"But the Chinese didn't do that! It was the Japanese!"
"Ach, Chinese, Japanese, it's all the same to me."

A few minutes go by, and then the Chinese man turns and kicks his neighbor hard in the shins.

"Ow!", yells the Jewish man, "What was that for?"
"That... was for... um, the Titanic!"
"The Titanic? What do I even have to do with that? That was sunk by an iceberg!"
"Iceberg, Goldberg, it's all the same to me."

The Soviet Premier, British Prime Minister and American President are all bragging about how good their intelligence services are. They decide to have a contest.

The KGB, the FBI, &  MI5 are all trying to prove that they are the best at finding spies. They release a rabbit into a forest and each of them has to catch it.

MI5 goes in. They place animal informants throughout the forest. They question all plant and mineral witnesses. After three months of extensive investigations they conclude that rabbits do not exist.

The FBI goes in. After two weeks with no leads they burn the forest, killing everything in it, including the rabbit and they make no apologies. The rabbit had it coming.

The KGB goes in. They come out two hours later with a badly bruised, bleeding, beaten bear. The bear is yelling, "Okay, okay, I'm a rabbit, I'm a rabbit!"

monkwarrior Monk, you've got the "Choosing not to respond" part down pat, which is great. But you keep throwing in additional ingredients that complicate things.

To be clear, a better response in situations like this would be either no response at all or something brief, such as "I'm not interesting in discussing this with you; thanks for understanding." You'll note that there are no insults here, such as "pointless" or "desperate."

Also, please leave the moderating to the moderators. Let us worry about our own stress levels and whether or not threads are getting clogged with nonsense comments.

Thanks.

squrlz4ever  I grew up in the country.  My first I was just wandering around the woods and found 3 baby coons in a tree hollow. I was young and stupid enough to take them instead of leaving them. So my dad made me take responsibility. 1 went to a family friend who raised it, I raised the other two. The other coons I raised were happenstance. I found one in my  attic and years later, in Dallas, 1 fell out of it's nest in the walls. The mother couldn't get to it but it SCREAMED AND SCREAMED so I opened the wall and pulled it out an raised it... that one I named Goodie Gonzalez
{"Are jew a producer?"  gay joke from a movie}.

Coons are not domestic. You have to know what you're doing.
Feeding every 3 hours.... it don't matter you got a test in spanish the next day feed the baby!
They have no control on their bowels/bladder... mothers lick their bellies but if you rub their tummies after feeding with a warm wash cloth to encourage a bowel movement that will work. Go to sleep until the next feeding.

After 5 or 6 weeks just leave them with cat food and a bowl of water. People think it's cute they wash their food but reality is they don't salivate as we do, dipping food in water helps chew and swallow food.

They are naturally clean, preferring a litter box and HERE'S THE BENEFIT their shit don't stink.  They like the litter box and don't have cat or dog odor.

Males will go ferrel months before females. They are aggressive.

That's "raising coons" in a nutshell

Gerry1of1 I really came to love black licorice in Finland. They make really, really good licorice there, possibly the world's best. At the Helsinki train station, there used to be a vendor who sold nothing but varieties of licorice. He probably had 100 different kinds of black licorice, which divided into two main categories: Sweet (what we're used to over here) and Salty (a favorite kind of licorice in Scandinavia).

Damn, I miss that stuff. Here's a bag of the salt licorice.

Essen Whoah! That's some language you chose to study. I used to be able to speak Finnish passably. At this point, I've lost most of it due to lack of use. I like to think it would come back if I returned there, but who knows.

The language, as I'm sure you know as well or better than I, is intimidating. I'll never forget the first time I had a full conversation suomeksi: It was something like 1:00 AM and I was taking a train to get home after a night of dancing in Helsinki. I was a little drunk, naturally, and an older Finnish woman sitting opposite me was also a little drunk. (Probably everyone on that train, in fact, was a little drunk.)

She addressed me (something along the lines of, "You don't look Finnish"), and I responded briefly, stating that I was an American, and quickly adding that I really don't speak the language. To which she replied, "You speak it very well." And away we went, chatting away for the next 30 minutes.

It was a huge milestone for me.

squrlz4ever For me it was easier to learn finnish than norwegian.
Yes the words are completely different but finnish grammers has no exceptions so if you learn a rule you can use it with confidence. The language has also no gender to keep track of.
Also finns simply deny to speak english with you if they know you are learning finnish.

Then there is the finnish school system. I ended up learning finnish good enough to read novelles (I highly recommend Aleksis Kivi's "Seven Brothers")

My milestone was when I had my first dream in finnish. Now I have forgotten the language :( I haven't spoken it in 17 years.

Here are some random words: päivä, huomenta, kaksi, jalkapallo, hampurilainen, tietokone, isoisä, pieni, mahtava.

When I think about the things my generation of kids thought they knew about sex, and discover that today's kids have many of the same insane ideas, I have to say that our culture can only be improved by early and accurate sex education.
I believe that access to safe birth control methods is as essential to the public health as good sewer systems, clean drinking water and childhood vaccination.

holygod Why would any human be against any of this in the year 2018?  Seriously?  All of this should be basic human education at this point.

...I need to figure out inter-dimensional travel to find the Universe where that exists...

Also...where did you bring up Abortion holygod ?  where?

(see the stupidity below)

kalron There is lots of stupidity on this subject, that is why I wanted to see if anyone was opposed to it. When someone tells me they are against abortion but then also against these things that can reduce unwanted pregnancies I find it difficult to comprehend.

holygod I was in Amsterdam recently for a wee holiday and had a look in past the kids science museum. They have a floor dedicated to sex, relationships and the human body. It was presented in a clear matter of fact way, no euphemisms or even worse ... cutsie  names for genitals. It's not surprising that the Netherlands have some of the lowest teen pregnancy and abortion rates in the EU.

Education is the way forward and from an early age.

I am, because it's murder, or sets the tone for accepting murder of innocent humans or those afflicted by STD's, and it is a problem spawned of a deeper problem:  Sinfulness, lusts, selfishness, covetousness,  and carelessness.  Why is it a problem?  Because humankind ignored the warnings again.  "That's ok" they say. "That's ok."  "We deem sinful and lustful things are ok now, and that can stay", as many sinful people will try to do.

Narrator: And then history repeated and humankind grew a little wiser to avoid the sinful way.

monkwarrior Well, we disagree about what sin is.

Until the cord is cut, that is the mother's body, and it belongs to her.

Once delivered, the baby has individual rights distinct from the mother.

And that's they way it should be.

Plus, your God has murdered far more life than anything else in history. That bastard decided to kill everything on the planet (except for one boat-load), just because he got mad one day.

You have a bizarre set of moral standards.

And the only murder going on here is when I reply to your nonsense.

monkwarrior A cowardly and transparent attempt to incite disciplinary action from mods when none is deserved.

If you want to end this discussion, then simply do not reply.

Like any adult would do.

It is your choice to abstain, and is a decision resulting in your responsibility to act (or not, in this case).

I am not responsible for your choice to end the conversation. So do not presume to shift that responsibility onto me. Your choice invites your response -- it does not invite a limit to my freedom to act.

Typical theists.

Draculya no, buckeyejoe has issues and is taking them out on me, their replies are, as you can see, pointless, and not providing the evidence asked for, so therefore continuing to whine because they are unable to provide facts and logic (or it fails them).

I am so sorry.

There is help available. Professionals can help you.

monkwarrior I don't think you can consider contraception as murder.  There is a potential case for an argument for abortion to be so, but I'm not sure preventing a pregnancy would be murder
