If you are feeling well off and maybe like sharing the wealth, consider micro loans.  Places like Kiva.org let you lend a small amount of money to people who need it.  I've made well over 500 loans, and most of the money has come back so I can lend it again to people who need it.

One of my children suffers from severe mental illness, the severely mentally ill are not lovable- they are blank eyed, frightening and difficult. Through every bout the behaviour has driven them onto the streets in fear, confused and delusional both locally and in London- not just for hours but for days, before they can be securely detained. in all of this time total strangers have shown nothing but gentle compassion, have given time and money to ensure this blank eyed delirious stranger is safe, has eaten and that either their family, or the police are aware. They have sacrificed their days or evenings out to sit with and carefully monitor a total stranger.
We are fucking up the planet in a monumental way, probably bringing mankind back into line with the rest of the animals- but the vast majority of humans are kind and generous. Capable of acts of great courage and compassion these people could, and probably would get our excess under control- but we must work together, against our individual self interest and pretty bloody quickly- I don't hold out much hope.

It genuinely disgusts me that some people are so comfortably insular in their cocoon of contentment and ignorance, that such things are considered a matter of perspective, or an attempt of politicians trying to make you believe something is worse than it is.

It doesn't effect me, my stocks are rising, my neighbours are OK, I have clean water and don't go to bed hungry. Everything is hunky dory, in my little sphere of existence.

For shame, gentlemen. For shame.

btw, the title on this post was ammended from tthe original submission...but even if it wasn't? Seriously, I'm at a loss for words.

"As bad as things seem"? I guess that's a matter of perspective.

trimble I have a good job, a paid-for house, clean running water on demand, a fridge full of food, everyone is healthy, and everyone is getting along (or else).  AND yay me, I've finally been able to regularly add to my savings.
