Pence Announces Creation Of Space Force Branch By 2020

Submitted by: fancylad 5 days ago in News & Politics

This afternoon, Vice President Mike Pence announced plans to establish a “Space Force” by 2020, which would be the sixth branch of the military and the first new defense branch since the Air Force was created in 1947.

During his remarks at the Pentagon, Pence said that Trump’s “highest priority is the safety and security of the American people. Space is, in his words, a war-fighting domain just like land and air and sea." He also said that the US’s presence in space was "not enough," and the country must have "American dominance in space, and so we will.”

Pence described some of the steps that will be taken to build the new military branch, including appointing a new assistant secretary of defense for space, building space warfighters, and forming a space-operations force that would pull "men and woman from across the military."

Secretary of Defense James Mattis announced that a report about the establishment of Space Force would be sent to Congress after Pence’s remarks, and called the new branch an effort to “adapt” to space becoming a “contested” domain. “We’ve got to be able to compete, to deter, and to win,” Mattis said.

The next step seems clear; cgina wants to build man made military islands in the south china sea?  Fine, we'll build missile bases on the fucking moon.

About time, someone needs to maintain all those death ray satellites up in orbit!

I hope this means we are finally taking the need to put squirrels in space seriously. I've ranted on this topic before, so I'll be brief: space gophers. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure the main objective will be to protect our satellites, I won't bore anyone with why.

I'm not really a military kind of person, and, not because of Trump, I would totally join the Space Force, lol

This can't possibly go badly. I mean sending soldiers into space, with weapons of war. /sigh.

Apart from the whole international treaties being crushed again (seems to be a thing with this administration), the massive funding issues, it's just a bad idea to put weapons up there. Also I'm sure Trump will be screaming at allied nations that they are not *doing enough to protect space and must up their spending on the space wars front*

The only upside I see it that it may encourage a new space race and finally get us poor slobs off this planet and onto bases in our solar system, which is a nice insurance policy for when things do finally go to shit down here.

Maybe Trump just hates that the private sector is gaining too much control and influence in space and thinks that only America should have that. At least my grandson may be able to join *Space police* and live out my fantasy's of zipping around in an X-wing.

Just another International Treaty the US government will end up ripping up.

"The treaty also states that the exploration of outer space shall be done to benefit all countries and that space shall be free for exploration and use by all the States"

So, Russia, China ect will all do the same. If you thought things were fucked up enough, just imagine the threat of several massive armys of missles owned by the superpowers of the world, all stationed in orbit above a majority of the world pointing towards us at all times.

Honestly, militarizing space is fucking retarded.

layla_wilson don't worry, it's just the treaty that prevents Russia from stationing un-interceptable nuclear missiles in orbit.

Where is the US cyber force?  This would be such a HUGE BOON not only to protect our country but to civilian companies who are always hungry for trained IT security personnel would happily hire cyber force vets.

Trump just cannot stop fucking shit up.

This is a foolish, doomed idea, but I am behind it. I favor anything that puts more humans off this planet. Mars isn't far enough away from the damage we can do if we really try, and the odds are against our putting a viable colony into another solar system in time. But we should try.
Robert Heinlein said that Earth is too small a basket for humanity to keep all its eggs in. We are getting closer to finding out why we're not hearing from anyone else out there.

Money for healthcare please?  Your health is your problem, we cannot afford to give people medical treatment!

Money for education please?  Your education is your problem, we cannot afford to give people higher education!

Money for Space Force please?  Is 100 Billion enough this year?  Lets just make it 200 just to be safe, if you need more, just shout out PATRIOTISM and we will bring more trucks of money.

On the other hand, at least the Coast Guard won't be low man on totem pole anymore.

daegog I don’t think this will ever even happen. A military branch? In space? In less than two years? With this administration? I’d bet everything this doesn’t get past the “Here’s what the uniforms might look like” stage.

fancylad The logistical issues alone are staggering.

Where are the bases gonna come from?  Where is basic training gonna take place?  Who is gonna figure out all the jobs needed?  Where are the trainers for these jobs gonna come from?

Expanding the Air Force to the Air and Space Force makes a million times more sense than this shit.  The Air Force already handles the low earth orbit stuff anyhow, are all those people meant to transfer to the space force?

That's such a shame, bringing humankind's wars to space.  I think there's probably a good reason we're confined here, because we haven't learned to live in peace and harmony.

monkwarrior I agree it's a shame. In the fallen world we live in, probably necessary and probably even a good idea (feel free to disagree, of course). But a shame, nonetheless.
