Today's Open Forum is brought to you by Fact Checking.

"Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.”
Daniel Patrick Moynihan

As humans we all share a weakness – our minds are easily manipulated through repetition. It is this weakness that politicians, and the media, use to control their followers. This manipulation technique is called proof by assertion. Basically when a trusted source repeats a lie enough times it becomes comfortable to our ears and at that point it becomes truth. Sometimes it even becomes our own thought. This is how opinion media and political pundits get their followers to repeat their spin and lies ad nauseam.

Once a lie gets set, it is almost impossible to get a person to admit they are wrong, because admitting they could believe a lie is admitting they are weak. But actually it is the opposite - admitting you are wrong is a sign of strength.

Below are different ways to check to see if what you are looking at is the truth:

Listen to your gut:
  • Is it too good to be true? Then it probably is.
  • Does it make you angry? More than likely it's sensationalism - news is boring.
  • Are you excited that it is finally happening? Again, news is boring. If the information makes you really excited that it is finally happening then it is probably not true.

Checking the political leaning of the source: An easy way to check the political leaning of your source is with Media Bias/Fact Check. This is also a way to find out if your source is satire. Just enter the name of your source in the search bar. Be skeptical of any source that registers beyond Right-Center or Left-Center (I'm looking at you MSNBC and Fox News). I recommend avoiding anything that registers in the extreme Left or Right. People will say it's good to see what those partisan sites on the other "side" are saying. No, no it's not. In my opinion it's all poison, especially the partisan sites that are on your side.

Fact checking is the best defense against spin and lies:
  • Web Browser: The easiest way to fact check an article is to copy the title, or the statement, and paste it into your Internet search with the words "fact check". A list of sites that have fact checked the claim will come up. But it is important to be leery of the source.
  • Snopes: This is a reliable non-partisan fact checking site. They site all their sources, include videos when available, and update their information when proven wrong. Stay ahead of the game and check their site weekly to see what lies are going around. Doing this, you'll find that most of what they fact check isn't even political.
  • FactCheck.org: They are little slow on their fact checking but if they have fact checked something, they fact check the hell out of it. Here is an example where they fact checked the false claims that Snopes is biased. FactCheck.org has earned multiple awards for their journalism and integrity.
  • Politifact: This is a decent source for fact checking politics on the right and the left. They also keep tabs on the promises made during presidential elections and the promises kept. The site has won a Pulitzer.
  • Truth or Fiction: Another non-biased source for fact checking.
  • News Fact Check: When looking at a news site's fact check, consider what is being checked and if the site you are looking at has any political bias.

Why not have an OPIUM forum one day? You know, a little break from the norm. Just a random thought.

I think this is going to be the first IAB post (that wasn't taken over by a troll or wasn't an angry post about an abusive member) to break the comment limit.

marsii I came across this quote

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.

Who who who said that?

monkwarrior I am speaking as a mod here. And no, this is not a warning. You, monkwarrior, are the mods biggest troublemaker. The main reason we have not banned you is I think Fancy loves the drama, although he has never admitted that.

You are not happy that people are ignoring you. That is a load of baloney. Look at these two posts you added 7 hours ago, trying to get a reaction. When no one bit you increased the font on one to an obnoxious super-sized troll level. No one still responded, so you trolled the site with the response above.

You are so consistent and dedicated toward getting people riled up it makes one think you are either a psychopath or a paid Russian troll. I'm leaning toward the later by the way you are starting to get concerned that people are ignoring your comments.

Your responses of "Interesting... Very interesting Indeed" 5-30 times a day is trolling. Your 4 simple words that you've said over a hundred times is trolling. The way you use conspiracy theories to get people riled up is trolling. The way you use religion to get people riled up is trolling and sacrilegious.

If you are seriously not a troll like you claim, why don't you start acting like it? You already have a calm disposition. You already refrain from verbally attacking people. Just add a little warmth and humor, and you will start making friends. And if you have a medical disposition that makes you behave in a way that makes people think you are a troll, let us know what it is. I guarantee if you are honest with people they will change the way they interact with you for the better. But it has to begin with you.

markust Well if 3/4 of the mods, at one point or another said personally they have issues with me, it's no surprise.  I knew fancylad was cool.

I am quite happy that the usual trolls are ignoring me, and no doubt they'll be sucking up to you in their hate of me (oh look lockner has already - big surprise, and i imagine the rest of the gang will chime in (desperately no less)).

It's an open forum and i posted what i found to be interesting, which i may not have done if i knew i had to deal with trollish responses. I also posted a serious atrocity.

But again, I'm quite happy trolls didn't respond, but we all know i am fully prepared to take the whole lot on if they chose to troll again.  I'm not a paid troll, I'm just a person who knows how to roll with a troll, and position them so that during a struggle when we roll to the edge i can fling them off and remain standing to watch them fall into the mist far below.

If you can't see the trolls in this post who are trying to rile others up (hint you've been interacting with them - and they'll suck up to you knowing you're a mod), i suggest you look a bit deeper.  As for "Interesting.. very interesting indeed", that's how i am dealing with trolls right now, and it works -  trolls hate having themselves exposed while getting nowhere.  Besides you should already know I'm not one after our interaction this week - a troll wouldn't let that go. I am quite content being myself, and quite aware trolls who get beat want to call me a troll, its all they can do.

Also, i don't use 'conspiracy theories', i use facts that a lot of people who have been ensnared by group dynamics don't like.  Their only reactions to it is call 'conspiracy theory', or use opinion, or other flawed 'fact checker' sites like snopes, to try ignore the facts they find displeasing.  Sometimes people are intelligent about it, but until the majority of people start talking the truth they will be to afraid to do anything other than what the uninformed crowd says is 'norm'.

monkwarrior, "If you can't see the trolls in this post who are trying to rile others up (hint you've been interacting with them - and they'll suck up to you knowing you're a mod), i suggest you look a bit deeper."

I do not see the people trolling you above as trolls, more as people you've dragged down to your level. When they're not interacting with you they do not behave this way. I agree that they need to stop behaving this way with you, and let their frustrations with you go, and ignore you like they said they would.

Update: Yes, we had a good talk last week. That is what I would love to see in you - more of that.

markust It's thinly veiled, but clearly there, but like i said i've found the last 3 weeks quite good since they've made an effort to let it go.  I'm quite capable of discussion, and i don't drag down, i simply lower myself to the troll's level to roll with them to the edge, to fling them off, then i return to my level.

0

Male 894
lockner01 I saw flashes of it on a screen I was passing by, something about Trudeau being duplicitous. At the time, I made a special mental note to check later the tweets.

But then, that's the (only) genius of trump. He is a master manipulator. So I haven't. I will wait for an analysis from someone with actual brains.

Of course, there is a risk of falling into isolation, with this attitude of ignoring the presidential first accounts. Normally, first accounts are invaluable. But trump is a functional moron so there is little depth in what he says.

So, not easy to work around that, he knows it and he exploits it well.

lockner01, “Did you see what Trump Tweeting about Trudeau last night?”

Weird. When I read bearbear01’s comment I immediately thought of how Trump managed to piss off soft spoken Trudeau at G7. If he can piss  Trudeau* off I don’t have much hope for a successful talk with Kim. What worries me most is Trump is saying he doesn’t need to prepare. He not only has to prepare, he needs to learn what mannerisms, sayings and gestures are insulting to North Koreans so he doesn’t accidentally disrespect his culture.

*My autocorrect replaced Trudea with implant. It was so weird but worked quite well as a bizarre insult for him.

Let me say first, that Trump is an embarrassment to America, and in no way qualified to hold the position of America's leader.
Now, why would he need to learn mannerisms, sayings and gestures that might be offensive to ... Anyone?
Do you think North Korea's leader is doing the same?
Do you honestly think Trump is NOT preparing for the meeting?

captkangaroo I believe he is doing what he calls preparing. But that is not in any way reading up on everything he needs to.

markust if there was any room for consequence out of this summit, I would be scared. Trump is playing the part of a cardboard prop for the long game by China. This summit is now useless, since NK continued the talks with SK while trump tried to kick the board.

I don't think NK would be unwelcoming of any offensive gesturing. They can save it for their propaganda later on. For Kim, it is only easy from here on.

markust it's a lost battle. The only extra downside is on trump's reputation. I'm curious, though. Kinda. Little bit. Maybe.

Back on point, for the long term US policy, it's better that he behaves like his usual ape. It will give the next administration easy pickings for international reconciliation.

Male 1,930
bearbear01 The biggest issue on the table during the summit was NAFTA. When Trudeau asked how Canada was a national security threat to the US Trump responded "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?"  Trump is now pissed off that Canada has put Tarriffs on very specific products like Bourbon and Maple Syrup.

Male 894
lockner01 oh yeah. I heard of that exchange. There may have been newer tweets since then. At least that was my impression, they looked different. Could have been related to these tariffs you mention.

I gotta say, for whatever good or bad the notion of Americanism is, trump is most Un-American.

lockner01 no no. Actually I was talking about the G7 with you, and the tweets I mentioned were about Trudeau. I'll see if I can find them.

Edit.

Here is tweet 1

Based on Justin’s false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!

And tweet 2, the duplicity tweet.

PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @ meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, “US Tariffs were kind of insulting” and he “will not be pushed around.” Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!

bearbear01 The following picture is all you need to see to tell Trump is full of shit and that he pissed everyone off at G7 and like the bully he is he's just picking on the nicest guy:

But the conservative leadership will flood the TV with attacks against Trudeu, making him the scapegoat for Trump's misgivings. And tonight and tomorrow the conservative media, blogs and pundits will fall in step and repeat the talking points ad nauseam until the actual news is forced to take it serious. And that is how bullshit is turned into fact.

bearbear01 Very real and very telling. Look at the frustration and hostility in the Japanese Prime Minister's arms being folded and the look on his face. Gestures are taken very seriously in Japan. Merkel's gesture is the most telling.

"The photo was tweeted by Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert. Shortly afterward, the White House issued a separate photo showing a sitting Trump speaking as Merkel, Abe and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau listen."

And yeah, Abe's look of exasperation. To lose form that way for a Japanese representative! I wonder what it is that trump was not understanding.
Going by the arms crossed posture, and the shrinking shoulders, trump was being schooled, and going by his blank stare, she might as well have been using German.
My oh my.

Thanks for the precious photo. That was something to see.

bearbear01 Imagine Canada imposing tariffs after Trump imposed a 25% tariff on steel and 10% on aluminum.  The US doesn't create enough steel to meet its demand. So the tariff is actually going to hurt US manufacturers.  There are a lot of people out here that are happy with the Maple Syrup tariff. US maple syrup is cheaper than local syrup up here -- so people might start buying more local.

lockner01 yes, some weeks ago when the steel tariffs were still only a threat, there was an interview in NPR, where some businessman was explaining how this move would hurt small scale business.

https://www.npr.org/2018/04/19/603298380/for-one-california-company-trumps-tariffs-have-unintended-consequences

As a matter of fact, googling "npr steel tariffs" brings up a lot of interesting reading material.

An interesting read, although I can't say I advocate the "listen to your gut" part. I feel like the heart, the gut the brain can be just as likely to let you down. With proper research, the brain should be least likely to fail you. I do agree with the general notion of this article, however, and I appreciate the information on additional fact-checking solutions like Snopes. I've been using Snopes and Hoax Slayer to help decipher bullshit from the not for a little while.

Is "partner" simply on  par with saying boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, etc.? I just always found it odd that it seems to be that people in same sex relationships use that term more often than people in opposite sex relationships.

Again, no offense intended. It's just that I was reading your comment, and it made me wonder.

i bought a ps4 vr! both the ps4 and vr were on sale at best buy, i had been thinking about buying used but when i saw the deal online i practically ran out the door. the package included skyrim vr, another vr shooter, and i bought batman arkham vr, it all came to just under a grand taxes included. the only problem is i like to get stoned before i play video games, and being stoned mixed with the virtual reality headset with the screen directly in front of your eyes is kind of nauseating. im totally fine if i dont have anything to smoke before i put on the vr headset, but... whats the point of playing video games with out being stoned ya know? i think i just need to get used to it, like i did with the 3d for the 3ds... the same 3ds i snapped in half because mario kart. it still works, the cables are still connected, its just that the two halves of the 3ds are literally hanging together by those cables. i hang on to it because its the only way im able to play batman arkham origins blackgate.

c/ drink lots of beer whilst the coals are becoming hot enough (edit: or a nice Riesling...your choice)
d/ listen to either disco, or Eurovision clips from the late 70's/ early 80's whilst doing it.

Gerry1of1 i bought a game on sale, dying light.  I started to play it but got stuck at the start trying to find a way down to level 13, then i found it and saw all the blood there and decided to wait to play another time and surfed the internet instead.  Honesstly though, i picked nightmare mode and it warned me the enemies would be very difficullt, and i was not feeling up to playing it right then.  I may revisit it today sometime.

Instead of cities you have colonies on planets. The boundaries aren't with countries they're with the Klingons / Romulans / Ferengi .   Usual technical development.  You win 1 of 2 ways.  Dominance of space or Technical dominance.   I usually win but I cheat

monkwarrior    There is no such thing as an atheist "movement".  It's not an organized club like religion. It is just individuals coming to the rational conclusion that religion is primitive superstition left over from earlier times.  The Jew/Christian/Muslim god is no more real than the Viking/Aztec/Roman gods.

Being gay may not be a choice but being atheist is. It's choosing to face reality and fact.

I have to give it Monk. This is impressive trolling. He makes the bigoted claim, “and yes being gay is a choice too”, knowing that is going to piss people off enough that they won’t notice that he followed it up with, “just as people choose to to take the action that makes everyone consider them straight.” Then all he had to do was respond against his full statement over and over, which gives the impression that he’s not answering people’s question when he actually is.

Proof by repeated assertion seems to be one of his favourites, so yeah, he's good at setting himself up for it.

Often times, I get the impression his intent isn't to convince anyone, but instead to reinforce his own beliefs. He is his own trusted source, and by repeating his thoughts where he can read them over, his beliefs turn to facts in his mind.

On the topic of choice/nature:

I've never chosen who I've been attracted to, or fallen in love with.

Trying to make it about engaging in sexual activity, comes across as an excuse for people that are for one reason or another, ashamed of the attractions they feel.

Gerry1of1 I am gay and I can say for certainty it's not a choice. Here is how I know it wasn’t a choice for me. I was watching the beginning of a Sean Cassidy documentary a few years back and they showed a clip of him in the Hardy Boys. I grew flush from this weird sexual remembrance. I was like what the fuck, how old were you when that show was on? I looked it up - I was nine. These bigot Christians can’t tell me I was choosing to crush on a man at nine. I grew up in a loving beaver cleaver household with zero gay role models. The attraction was all me. I didn’t have this same attraction to any of the female singers or movie stars.

I played the part and dated girls, but can’t remember one time where I jerked off thinking about a woman. I was born attracted to men.

buttersrules Every time you get upset Monk wins and he leans back in his chair and laughs and laughs. His goal is to make people upset. To literally get into their head and infect them. The ONLY way to “win” against him is to let it go and ignore him. The best way to do this is go into a dark room and sit in a comfortable way and think about him. And then forgive him. And forgive yourself for allowing him to have an influence. It may take a few times but the forgiveness will eventually stick and you will be free. I know this sounds like hippy bullshit but forgiveness actually works.

markust Firstly: my goal isn't to make people upset.  Like i said, i realize people don't like facts, and prefer opinion.

Secondly : Forgiveness does work indeed, but you don't need a dark room at all, but practicing forgiveness works wonders, and you can do it almost instantaneously, as i do with many trolls who have been on this site.  Drawing close to God can help people learn even greater tools for forgiveness.

When that was actually true, it meant that whether you were going to Rome or fleeing Rome, you were on a Roman road. If a man is straight but he chooses a celibate life like priest or such, is he still straight? He's not having straight sex.

Being gay is not about "choosing" to have gay sex.  It is about who you love. Who you  want to build a life with, who you want as a husband. Or call it "life partner" if your prejudice is more comfortable.

Do you think being straight is only about having straight sex? Are you straight even if you abstain from straight sex? Of course you are. And a gay man is just as gay even if he's a virgin.

I don't think you are mean spirited, but you are definitely
ignorant on this topic. You lack knowledge.

You can chose to be nice or to kill someone, but you can't choose to be good at music or be tall. Part of your sexuality becomes sexual actions, but they can be suppressed as well. But if you are gay, you are still gay even if you don't ever have sex.

monkwarrior like any fundamentalist, you are fundamentally wrong.

You, who are (supposedly) not gay, are being told by at least two gay men and at least two straight men why and how you are wrong about this, yet you still don't get it.

You have to surrender to the fact that also in this aspect, you have zero idea of what you are talking about. First accounts are valuable in social sciences. I know science means nothing to you, and quite frankly this reply, while it is addressed to you, it is for third parties. So know this: it doesn't make a difference if you accept or not that you are wrong. You are wrong anyway.

You would be perceived in a better light if you weren't an obstinate fool, but that's on you and for you only. But you are a fundamentalist. And as such, fundamentally what? Wrong.

monkwarrior A choice is a choice, but you can't decide to be taller, or have a size 7 head.  I can't choose to have perfect eyesight.  I can't choose.

from folks who have the direct knowledge, it isn't a choice for them.  For some folks it is - those folks can walk on either side of the street.

Gerry didn't make a choice - he is the way he is because he was born that way.

Being an asshole, being a Christian, being a fireman, beings a father, being an American - these are choices.

We can debate which choices are good ones; we know what may work for some people would be a poor choice for others.

As was illustrated to be earlier - you can choose to be a mother - being a daughter isn't your choice.

You can choose to act on the desire to murder or not,
- God condones murder in the bible

to commit adultery or not, or to engage in homosexuality or not,
- I suppose your priests do both when they rape little boys.

I think the best choice is to not follow the words of god as expressed in the bible. If you want to be a good person, that is. In fact, every good person I know, whether they are theist or atheist, most certainly does NOT follow what the bible says.

You should read your Bible.

"Hogg huddled with other students during the shooting, using his cellphone to record those around him. Ashley Kurth, a culinary arts teacher, said she taught Hogg when he was a freshman. When the shooting erupted, Kurth sheltered students who had been outside her classroom.

“I physically grabbed David by the arm and pulled him into my room,” she said. “It is extremely frustrating the kind of information that is being put out there.”

In an interview with Vox published Feb. 20, Hogg specified the time of his bike ride: 6 p.m., after the shooting."

dm2754 That is called a soundbite, context can be hard to gleam from so little information.  Perhaps if we saw the entire interview then context becomes self-evident.

Its like if you just heard trump say "Grab her by the pussy", it could be hard to determine what he was talking about, without hearing the entirety of that conversation.

If you were to surmise context from that one soundbite, the reasonable answer would be that trump is a rapist.

buttersrules The best engine in the world is the vagina, it takes any size piston, is self lubricating, starts with 1 finger, and every 4 weeks it does it's own oil change.

It's just a pity the management system is so fucking temperamental.

lockner01 I would defend Hitler's right or free speech but it doesn't mean I
endorse him or that I am  his "champion".

You're really taking all of this too personally

Gerry1of1 Yes -- I started taking it personally when you labelled me a bully for making an innocent comment and a prediction that came true.

When you sling mud at me that is unjustified I will take it personally.

Gerry1of1 So you using the "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me" argument. So why the fuck do you care what people say to Monk?  You're being his champion.

Just above Buttersworth called Monk a cunt. You told him not to be a twat. Why?

You tried to label me a bully -- offering a false dichotomy doesn't make you right. You made the claim and can't offer an explanation why.

And I used to like you but saying something like " I hurt your itty bitty feelings" is just patronizing and makes you look like an asshole.

I have the feeling that you're one of these people that got bullied when you were younger, maybe for being gay maybe not. But now that you've become a bit more self-confident you've turned into a bully; under the guise of defending the underdog.

Gerry1of1 You labelled me as a bully. That's an open ended label.  Do you go around kicking other guys in the nuts then say "Get over it dude"?

Seriously; you threw down a huge insult and you're just brushing it off?

lockner01 I'm just going to copy and paste what I told butters: Every time you get upset Monk wins and he leans back in his chair and laughs and laughs. I know this sounds like hippy bullshit but forgiveness actually works.

markust I completely agree with you. I've been making a point of ignoring him.  The only time lately I acknowledged something he said was to say that for once I agreed with him.  The interesting thing is that that's the only time he's never replied to a direct comment.

lockner01 what you remark is a clear example of a systemic problem.  Any organization that is self respecting, and moreso one, like the church claims to be, that is supposed to exist for the good of others would surrender and disband itself in shame. And their followers to disassociate themselves from it.
You would think that kids being abused by their own priests would open their eyes. But it goes beyond stupidity. It is vileness, a fundamental rot, but most of all it is hate for others.

bearbear01 So I've said before that I live in Nova Scotia. I won't give anymore detail than that because there's a member on here that has threatened to contact my employer.

Anyway-- the bishop of Antigonish; Bishop Lahey resigned in 2009 after they found child porn on his computer.  Turns out he was diddling kids back to 1950.  There was a $15mil class action law suit which the church had to pay.  It's a huge Catholic area. The Vatican decided they would have to sell off property to pay for the law suit. Most of the people in the area were up in arms. They were more concerned about the church hanging on to the property than the victims.
