Off-duty FBI agent doing backflip in a bar shoots man in the leg

An excerpt from The Guardian: Denver agent was dancing when the weapon fell from his holster and was accidentally fired, wounding a man.

An FBI agent is under investigation after he accidentally discharged his firearm as he performed a backflip at a Denver nightclub.

The off-duty agent was dancing when the handgun fell from his waistband holster. It fired as he went to pick it up, wounding another customer in the leg.

The man, who was not badly injured, was taken to a local hospital, a Denver police spokesman said.

The only way to stop an idiot with a gun is ... his mother dragging him away from the party by his ear.

I would like to know why the safety was off in the first place?

Who does a backflip on the dance floor? That is the weirdest part of the story to me.

Would this normally be enough to get his permit to carry revoked?  If so hasn't he rendered himself incapable of carrying out his duties?

LordJim Unfortunately certain guns such as some Gloc handguns don't have a real safety switch.

Just another example of the crumbling professionalism of the FBI.  When the top is corrupt, it just spreads down the line.

Drinking and crazy dancing, while armed with a handgun with a bullet chambered.....is something my kids knew not to do when they were 10 years old.
Also, it seems to go off when the guy picks the gun up...i.e. he put his finger inside the trigger guard to pick up the gun!  i.e. no training OR totally drunk.  This guy needs to be fired.

So he was in a bar with a loaded handgun, doing backflips.  Presumably it was a glock with 'just' trigger safety.  Oh, and he 'had one in the chamber'.  Not smart.

wibble4321 In ‘97 the fibbies went with a Gen3 model 22 or 23 in .40 S&W. Gen3 does have the trigger safety but not the internals that come with Gen4 models. They have recently switched to the option of a Glock 17 in 9mm. This is a Gen4 with the trigger and internal safety. A Gen4 will not discharge if dropped. It just won’t. You can use it as a hammer to drive nails and it will not fire. All leo’s keep one in the chamber. As a ccw holder I keep one in the chamber. You don’t have time to rack the slide, or afford the sound it makes, in a situation. My handguns in the house I do leave the chamber empty because Fang usually will be making enough noise to hide the sound should someone arrive “ unexpectedly “.

scheckydamon Thanks for the insight.  I get the idea of having one in the chamber for LEOs on active duty or holstered but it seems incongruous when tucked in the waistband at a a bar.

wibble4321 Yea and no. Remember that LEO's are considered on duty even when off, especially when they are armed. Those sweaty dancing fools look dangerous to me.

Not criminally negligent but definitely civil. He should either settle or have to pay up. Dont think it will stretch to employer liability unless FBI have a policy to have safety off or he didnt attend training and was still carrying.

The agent isn't getting a fair shake. I saw the video. He wasn't dancing.

"...Doc, it's only a scratch. And I'll be better, I'll be better, Doc, as soon as I am able..."

Well he will get away with it because after watching the video I'm convinced that he was having a fit of some kind of fit and so is not responsible.

He should be jailed for doing back-flips on the dance floor.

If he wasn't dancing, this would have never happened.  Dancing is bad.  Now I understand the premise of Footloose.

abetterworld So the Baptist preacher was doing the bump in his office with one of his parishioners. All of a sudden there comes a banging on the office door. Preacher, you in there he heard. So he said quietly to the parishoner, quick get dressed. We can’t have them thinking we’re dancing in here.

 accidentally discharged his firearm
No, that was pure negligence. Accidental is a malfunction like a drop safety not working (looking at you Sig) and you can clearly see him putting his booger hook on the bang switch as he goes to pick it up.
