Mexico Candidate Shot While Posing For Selfie As Killings Of Politicians Continue

Submitted by: trimble 2 months ago in News & Politics

An excerpt from The Guardian: Fernando Purón had just finished an election debate with his rival congressional candidates in the Mexican border city of Piedras Negras, when a well-wisher asked to join him for a selfie.

But as he posed for the photograph outside the auditorium, a bearded gunman stepped up behind the pair and shot Purón in the head.

The cold-blooded murder on Friday – captured by a CCTV camera – has cast a harsh light on the stunning levels of violence in Mexico and the risk taken by those who run for elected office in the country.

Purón was the 112th political candidate murdered in Mexico since September 2017, according to Etellekt, a risk analysis consultancy.

And the country is bracing for more bloodshed before 1 July elections, when voters will pick a new president, renew congress and fill hundreds of state and local positions.

The motives for the murder remain uncertain, although Purón had received death threats during his stint as mayor of Piedras Negras, where he had 10 bodyguards and was said to have incurred the displeasure of the city’s dominant crime group, the notoriously ruthless Zetas.

During the debate just before his death, Purón had pledged again to defy organised crime, according to the newspaper Vanguardia. “You take on crime head-on – you don’t fear it, you call it for what it is,” he said. “Unfortunately, not all those in power do their job – some are even in cahoots with criminals.”

If I were going to run for office in mexico, i would try to meet with some cartel people before hand and explain my plan to "publicly" go after crime but in reality, i would let them conduct their business as usual.

In exchange, I would ask them for some chump change to improve public works and facilities to keep the people happy.  New Parks, playgrounds, that sort of thing.

Would probably still get whacked tho.

monkwarrior What the fuck is wrong with you to come on here bragging about how you don't have any comprehension of Spanish, making childish jokes about the Spanish language, when the post you have stumbled blindly and stupidly into is about Spanish-speaking people.

You don't have time for the language of the people you are insulting, but you have time to make childish jokes about something about which you are proud to be ignorant.

"me non speakge de la spanyardo" That isn't something to be proud of; it is something to be ashamed of. You are an embarrassment to the species.

Draculya Not evil, just expedient. Go along to get along. Bread and circuses: you got it. Murder-for-hire: I'm on board. Facilitate the economic rape of the people: got your back. If I don't get caught and taken down during my lifetime, after I die, I will be called a statesman. Most modern governments candy-coat it better.

In my imaginary ideal government, all public offices are filled the way we fill juries. You get a letter directing you to report for duty as Mayor, or Senator, or City Councilman or President. A letter from your doctor might get you out of it; otherwise, you serve the term, and then you're off the list. I call it "Your turn in the barrel."
