mrteatime I was on leave from Okinawa.  We took a MAC (military space available) flight and spent 2 weeks there sightseeing/shopping.  Amazing country, amazing food but yeah, that DMZ was creepy af.

I hadn't heard of this incident before doing some research on YouTube.

It hints at how uneasy the Armistice situation was/is. Remember half of South Korea lives within artillery range of the border. 

Half of each of two countries (not to mention Americans) could have been killed over an inconvenient tree.

It would almost make sense to launch nuclear missiles over a poplar tree.

I think it would be a perfect circle of absurdity.
