Cornell Student Presents Thesis In Bra And Panties To Protest Professor's "Oppressive Beliefs"

Submitted by: littlemissqt 3 months ago in News & Politics

A Cornell University senior stripped to her bra and underwear during her thesis presentation — and got two dozen others to join in — to protest her professor’s contention the week before that her clothing was inappropriate.

Letitia Chai led the revealing demonstration Saturday during her “Acting in Public: Performance in Everyday Life” class to stand up “against oppressive beliefs,” she said in a Facebook Live video of the event.

It came days after her professor, Rebekah Maggor, questioned whether the denim cutoff shorts Chai was wearing during a test run of the presentation were too short.

“The first thing that the professor said to me was ‘is that really what you would wear?” Chai wrote in a Facebook post about the incident. “The professor proceeded to tell me, in front of my whole class, that I was inviting the male gaze away from the content of my presentation and onto my body,” she wrote.

“I think that I was so taken aback that I didn’t really know how to respond,” she told the Cornell Sun.

Some students stood up for her, telling the professor she was the one being inappropriate and questioning her perception of men, but one international student sided with the teacher, saying it was Chai’s moral obligation to dress more conservatively.

“Am I morally offending you?” Chai said she asked the student, with tears of rage in her eyes, before storming out of the room.

Funny how she kept the bra on. Bras are definitely for the benefit of appearing more attractive to men, cause there is no other good reason to wear those devices of torture.

And ... Not a real world view worth a shit.
Can you imagine this snowflake being told something disagreeable on the job and then pull a stunt to register her moral outrage?

The first comment is very valid. Would she wear short shorts to present/job interview?
She can, but she won't be taken seriously at all.

The second comment about being a distraction is complete BS.

I still think she overreacted, and probably should fail her thesis, if she doesn't present what was expected. But this is just my opinion.

DuckBoy87 She is young and pretty dumb.  You have to realize, not every fight is worth fighting.  For me, the point of every class was to get the information and a decent grade and get out of it, trying to show up your teacher is a lose-lose situation.

It's not like the teacher will just up and say "Gee, you were right, lemme give you an A for effort".  That shit won't happen.

The teacher got it wrong in one aspect, it literally doesn't matter what a woman wears, men are gonna ogle no matter what, its basically what we do.

kind of a high-schoolish prank.  Usually when you are presenting your advanced degree thesis, you are hoping to be taken as an ADULT!  Some young adults just do not think things thru.

so I guess what we're saying here is another fine example of the pussy pass.
What should have happened is the teacher should have immediately call campus security the moment she took her clothes off.
She should be permanently expelled from that campus and be charged with a crime.
I'm willing to bet she doesn't even get kicked out of rhe class and get an "incomplete"

Okay, I'm gonna get nearly naked and sexy but don't you male-animals even think about serializing me as a person!  Just 'cause I'm almost topless doesn't mean you can look at my boobs.

Kind of difficult to determine the context, but what if the teacher was giving constructive criticism.  When I was in school, we did a lot of presentations for chemistry that were attended, and graded, by other prof's.  Perhaps this was a class on public speaking and the prof was trying to help her students be more effective speakers?

dkm458 you nailed it right there. With modern snowflakes you cannot give them criticism. It's degrading to women to criticize anything they do. No matter how much they fail they must be praised

Is anyone so desperately bored they actually watched all 40 minutes of this?
If so what is she bitching about? It's like she was going on about the Tibetan plateau

bb17 ignorance is what is wrong with society today. maybe her skirt was a little too short, but that doesnt mean the teacher needed to shame her for it. what exactly is it that you you think is wrong about a university student presenting a demonstration called "Acting in Public: Performances in every day life." in their underwear? it sounds to me like presenting that particular demonstration in their underwear had a specific point. college and university give young people the chance to learn and discover the world and themselves, and along the way they do some crazy and often really stupid shit. im not saying this presentation was stupid, i am kind of saying it was a little crazy though and that this is exactly the type of thing university and college kids do, not just "typical liberals."

dm2754 if the skirt was too short and she broke a rule, then the teacher should have pointed it out in private. instead she shamed her in front of the entire class. because a teacher and student were "morally offended" she stomped out of the classroom in tears. the punishment for dress code violation shouldnt be humiliation in front of your peers.

robthelurker  you're right we wouldn't want anyone's feelings to be hurt especially a woman's delicate feelings.
I propose a new ordinance that police officers can only arrest women in private so they're not embarrassed publicly.

dm2754 first, this isnt about women. if it were a man violating a dress code i would expect the teacher to tell them so in private, not shame them publicly. a man can be shamed into storming out in tears just like a woman.

second, "we wouldn't want anyone's feelings to be hurt" it was the teacher and student who were "morally offended" by the way she dressed in the first place.

robthelurker so tell me what are your children play I want to walk around naked in front of them. It's good to know that you have no moral objection to how a person is dressed. Then you and I can go somewhere private and have a "talk" ;-) wink

dm2754 naked? this woman was just in her underwear. have you never been to a public beach or swimming pool? i have no moral objection to how a person is dressed so long as they are dressed, but public nudity is a different story.

robthelurker Her thesis was about refugees.  Extremely unprofessional (unless you're a stripper) to present such a topic in bra and underwear.  Not to mention the fact that she stripped in mid-talk as a "gotcha surprise."  I 100% guarantee she is liberal.

bb17 i understand what her thesis was, but this demonstration was performed in a class called "Acting in Public: Performances in every day life" or so the article says. seems kind of appropriate, or in the very least the kind of thing youd expect from young crazy college/university kids.

why does it matter to you so much whether or not she is liberal?

robthelurker this is all a part of the liberal movement.  to think otherwise shows your stupidity.  can you imagine this happening 30 years ago AND having support?  its insane that anyone would support this train of thought to strip down in a public setting.  she should be sued for sexual harassment by everyone in the audience.  can you imagine if a dude stripped down in front of a bunch of women (not in a strip club)??  BOTH instances are inappropriate.  but what do i know.  i'm just some dude with actual morals and decency.  not someone who pushes every limit for shock value and attention.

bb17 this is just a university chick in her underwear. people have performed far more outrageous acts of demonstrations while in college/university.

what exactly is wrong with the liberal movement? and what is so crazy about someone stripping down to their underwear in a public place in an act of demonstration?
