Camels Vs. Cacti

Submitted by: Draculya 4 weeks ago in Weird

The mouth of the Dromedary camel has adapted to be able to eat whole pieces of prickly pear cactus, six-inch long needles and all. I hope it digests more thoroughly than sweet corn.

Camels tend to drool when they eat, maybe because of that split lip. I dunno. When I was a kid, I used to take a banana to the local zoo and feed it to a camel, skin and all. As the camel chewed up the tough skin, the inside of the banana would mix with saliva and start drooling down in long ropes. To a ten-year-old, the expressions on the faces of the audience were worth the price of the banana.

Am I the only one who found himself involuntarily muttering "Ow... ow... ow... ow... ow" the whole time while watching that video?

squrlz4ever No, it was pretty painful to watch. I wander how they do that and not get it stuck in their throats or mouths...Lord have mercy. That’s some fiber they got there.

pinkminx22 I think I read somewhere that the inside of a camel's mouth is essentially like leather and made for eating all sorts of nasty desert flora that are covered with thorns and spikes. Regardless, the video still makes me wince. Those cactus spines are like needles. Yeesh.

I've seen giraffe and elephants eat some gnarly acacia, but I just can't fathom how a dromedary eats a cactus.
