What's Your Personality Type?

Submitted by: monkwarrior 6 months ago in Science

Get a concrete, accurate description of who you are and why you do things the way you do, for free with this Myers-Briggs test.

I did it and my personality type is: Advocate (INFJ-a).  After reading the description, I have to say it's very accurate.

Take the Test try for yourself (just be honest about it), and share below!

I rarely post on this site, but as I am a Personality Psychologist and this is in my field of expertise, I figured I would chime in. This test, The Myers-Briggs, while popular in the business world and on the internet, isn't taken seriously by contemporary psychology researchers. Generally, this measure is used as an example of the Forer (Barnum) Effect. Without going into any real detail (as I believe someone previously posted a link to an empirical article explaining the problems with this measure) I will just summarize by stating that this test lacks the psychometric properties (i.e., reliability and validity) necessary to be taken seriously by contemporary researchers. It serves as a great ice-breaker at parties, but honestly, isn't any markedly better than horoscopes (which not too surprisingly I discuss along side the MBTI in my courses).

  1. Apparently I am Virtuoso (ISTP-a) I have no idea what that means IRL. I find it impossible to care, but monkwarrior requested that we take the test and post the results, and that seemed a resonable request.

Every time I take this test, INFP is what I get.

I also seem to become more introverted too, which I have been noticing to myself. I don't on social media as much, and prefer my own thoughts to anything else.

Interesting to note most of the users that commented on here are also introverted, I wonder if that says anything about this site.

On note: another good test is to check the big 5 personalities (and each of the five have two sub-parts). These often cost a bit though, but the ones that do tend to actually give deep analysis.

Fojos The Five Factor Model (or the Big-5, which is slightly different) are the two most widely utilized personality models used today. There are many free sites in which you can take the shorter form versions, which are around 60-items. One I used in some of my courses is: http://www.utpsyc.org/Big5/

However, if you (or anyone) want a more detailed analysis here is a 300-item version which will not only give you your 5-factor scores, but also the 30 facets that make up these factors. I have not actually used the one at the following link, as I have taken the pencil and paper version. However, a colleague sent me this link and says it works well: http://www.personalityassessor.com/ipip300/

Hey guys. Can we try to compartmentalize things a little better? Monk drives me batshit crazy on a nearly constant basis, but this isn't about his self righteousness, or conspiracy theories, or trolling. This was a fun, neat post and there isn't any reason to bring other shit into it.

I stuck up for 5cats the same way. There is no need to downvote a post or comment because of who made it. I get into it with monk as much as anyone but I don't downvote his comment unless I disagree with the actual content.

We have to be able to go after each other in one post and then set it aside and be cordial in another. I know I need to work on this too.

On the other hand you reap what you sow, you are your reputation to an extent. Even more so when you're just a handle and an avatar.

INTJ-A, "The Architect." Last time I took the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), I received the same result and that was 3-1/2 years ago. The results seem pretty on-target, in my opinion.

The Wikipedia article I've linked here gives a really good background on the test, with the pros and cons, and is worth the read.

squrlz4ever Nice. I didn't take this one, but I've taken the Myers-Briggs as well as the original version that Jung developed and I always land as in INTJ. I guess it's the rarest personality type, only about 2% of the population. I've yet to meet a female INTJ. They call them "black unicorns", INTJ is almost always a male personality type, so they're the rarest of the rare at around 0.8%.

Nice submission. A couple notes:
The test produces a percentage for each measure. If you're close to 50%, then you'r in-between. The detailed descriptions won't take that into account.
The test can be rather vague, so take the results with a grain of salt.

The test classified me as Logician (INTP), but there were 2 areas that were close to 50%, so it may not be accurate.

boredhuman I almost hesitate to chime in because I don't want to encourage any arguing in the thread, but thanks, BH: You're understanding the spirit of the guidelines.

We're trying to compartmentalize discord. If people can limit their rancor to the particular thread that's got them upset, that would be far better than everyone being in a perpetually pissy mood about every insult they've ever received on here and making attacks in every darned thread. (I know you get this, BH; stating it here for the general readership.)

Personally? I thought this was an interesting post. It's been years since IAB has done this personality test and there are always people who are seeing it for the first time. (I didn't approve the submission, either, so I don't have anything vested in the post. Just giving my honest thoughts as an IABer.)

abetterworld It's a great for understanding the types of thinking out there.  Granted there are some problems, for example people may make preferences based on what people have told them of themselves, or their mood.  But i don't think it's like a horoscope at all, since it's based on your own understanding of yourself, whereas a horoscope makes some pretty wide-ranging 'futures'.  Take it with a grain of salt, but i took it and noticed it was useful in understanding myself a bit more, or can aid in personal growth.  I found it had uncanny accuracy, a bit of an eye-opener.  Mileage may vary.

lockner01 A couple observations here. One, let's not use a disciplinary action by the mods as an opportunity to taunt.

Two, sometimes I see the two of you in these threads and it brings to mind those photos of two bucks whose antlers got stuck together: they couldn't disengage and they spent their final days miserably locked together until they both dropped dead from exhaustion.

Whichever of you first develops the ability to just shrug off these verbal duels you two keep getting in, and learns to walk away from a taunt, will be the one who's showing some capacity for growth, maturity, and self-knowledge. Just the opinion of a squirrel here, and perhaps I'd do better to keep such opinions to myself, but there it is.

You might respond more often in a certain way, but it shouldn't necessarily be seen as your norm, its just how those particular situations dictated the responses.
