The New Trailer For "The Meg" Takes The Concept Of "Jaws" To A New Level

Submitted by: Gerry1of1 5 months ago in Entertainment

A deep sea submarine is attacked by a megalodon shark, thought to be extinct. With the ship disabled at the bottom of the sea, a rescue diver and oceanographer must quickly work to rescue the crew.

Megalodon is extinct... WRONG!

This movie is based on a book, which I have read, and was most excellent, so I am looking forward to this movie :)

If I'm ever somewhere and I see Jason Statham around, I'm out of there.  Always trouble  wherever he's standing.

takes the concept of jaws to another level? why? because its about an even bigger shark? the concept of jaws was showing less is more, i mean that wasnt the intention, but the concept was the less you saw of bruce the mechanical shark, the more you imagined how scary it was. they showed the meg within the first 15 seconds of this trailer. it looks like the concept of this movie is jason statham vs giant shark. The Meg and Jaws are two very different movies. The Meg looks like its going to be a fun action thrill ride. Jaws is a terrifying dramatic thriller... that happens to have (spoiler alert) an exploding shark at the end.

squrlz4ever do you watch a lot of chinese cinema? according to imdb, it looks like besides chinese film and television, she has done three movies, transformers age of extinction, resident evil retribution, and something called guardians of the tomb.

squrlz4ever You will be.  They are financing many action movies now (Skull Island, Warcraft, to name a couple off the top of my head) and to cater to the very large Chinese audience, they require a few asian stars.

abetterworld Interesting. I hadn't heard of this before, but it makes sense. Hey, if it discontinues the practice of putting caucasians who are pretending to be Asian into Asian roles, I'm all for it. (See: Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's.)

squrlz4ever Shit! That was Mickey Rooney?  What a true thespian.

squrlz4ever   Mickey Rooney is no more or less offensive than Marlon Wayans was in White Chicks.   And Yul Brenner was perfect for his part as an asian. Sidney Toler as Charlie Chan also good.

Gerry1of1 Yul Brynner is Asian. There's actually a statue dedicated to him and Mongolia.
Rob Schneider is also Asian.

dm2754 Brynner used to tell press he was born "Taidje Khan" part mongol parentage. But that was just hollywood hype. His dad was a swiss engineer in Vladivostok and Yul was Swiss/German/Russian with about 1% Buryat

Gerry1of1 has anyone seen that racist Attack on Titan movie? Not only was there a lack of diversity they had a bunch of Japanese kids playing European parts.

Gerry1of1 I'm going to have to disagree with you there, Gerry, particularly in regards to Rooney's portrayal of Mr. Yunioshi. Heck, even the movie studio behind Breakfast at Tiffany's has acknowledged that the role as portrayed was an offensive caricature of the Japanese.

I think the comparison you're making with Marlon Wayans in White Chicks is specious. Wayans was portraying a black man pretending to be a white woman: the effect was intended to be ludicrous. Rooney's character, on the other paw, was portrayed with coke bottle glasses, taped eyelids, fake buck teeth, and idiotic behavior in order to convey the message Japanese people are ridiculous; let's laugh at them.

It was exactly the kind of performance you'd see in minstrel shows where a white man would put on blackface and exclaim, "Oh dey a ghost ova dare, Massuh, and I's so afeard!" We're talking about racial stereotypes here, created so that one group of people can point and laugh at another.

squrlz4ever I think White Chicks also contained racial stereotypes and created so a group of people could laugh at another.

However, the point you made about it being a black man pretending to be a white woman as part of the movie plot makes a HUGE difference. Kind of like RDJ's character in Tropic Thunder.

yelloow12 Thanks, Yelloow. You know, I really shouldn't be discussing White Chicks because all I've seen are still and clips. I've never seen the movie, so I could be way off. But yes, I've got to figure that the plot aspect there makes a big difference in terms of the nature of the laughter it's going for.

It's fun to analyze movies from the villain's perspective.
What are the villain's: Motives, goals, wants, desires, obstacles, history, etc

Why would a megalodon bite a glass of a giant object? Why would it venture outside its habitat to the surface, and especially the shallows of a beach?

The team shouldn't try to kill it, but track it and study it, while keeping the world informed of the great discovery.

The movie appears mindless with a single redeeming feature: Rainn Wilson character pointing out the stupidity of the whole thing.

boredhuman Sharks bite things that are unfamiliar to them.  So it would bit the glass once, discover it wan't food, then move on.

boredhuman Why would a megalodon bite a glass of a giant object?

As I tell my daughter whenever she asks why someone in a movie does a dumb thing: (example: why do big-breasted cheerleaders wear high-heels when camping next to Crystal Lake? Why do people spend one more night in a haunted house?):  Because it's in the script.

megrendel   Why would it bite glass.... 'cause it looks like a jelly fish.
That's why turtles eat & choke on plastic bags floating in the ocean.
Or maybe just to test the thing, like when the bite the side of a shark cage.

megrendel Yeah, you can dress up a turd of a script with as much FX as you wish, but it's still a turd. Who are these screen writers anyway: Steve Alten? James Vanderbilt

robthelurker I have read the synopsis: Severed heads... crocodile blown up by a grenade launcher... baby crocodiles for the sequels...
I'll probably read the synopsis for Meg, too, to find out how long the screenwriters let Rainn Wilson character live before feeding him to the shark in an ironic fashion.

boredhuman okay, so in lake placid oliver platts character is trying to save the crocodile. it has taken human life, but oliver platt still wants to save it because a 30 ft saltwater crocodile making its way to a fresh water lake in maine is practically a miracle. yes, a crocodile gets blown up, but they manage to save the one.

im not saying thats going to happen in the meg, but it does appear that rainn wilson appears to be the comedic voice of reason, much like oliver platts character in lake placid.

and besides dude, this isnt a movie about a giant shark, this is a movie about jason statham vs a giant shark, of course the giant shark isnt going to win.

It doesn't look as good as the last one. Hell, the last move the Megalodon ate an airplane out of the sky. You can't top that

I think I will take my kids to this - they will be terrified, probably, but they also love Jurassic Park and I take them to fossil and rock shows semi-regularly.  (I actually got a Megalodon tooth for one of my kids for Christmas - it's the size of my hand.)

Pardon my french, but this looks fucking awesome. I loved Jaws as a kid and have watched it many times since....but man this looks cool as hell.......:) Rainn Wilson from The Office will definitely bring some great comic relief and Jason Statham is a great pick for the Meg killer.......can't wait to see it.......;)

That's a whole lotta shark fin soup. The movie seems accurate tho:

Rando: "We thought they had been extinct for 2 million years"

Jason Statham: "Lets kill it"
