TPP Trump Flip Flops

Submitted by: normalfreak2 5 months ago in News & Politics

Remember When Donald Trump tweeted the following:

Or said this:

Does this still count as a Promise Kept to those that voted for him?

Per the "Fake News" New York Times:

Michael Miller, the chairman of U.S. Wheat Associates and a farmer in Washington, said rejoining the deal would allow his industry to compete on a level playing field with competitors in Australia and Canada, which both remained in the accord.

But rejoining it could be a complex task. The remaining countries, like Japan, moved ahead without the United States, and spent months renegotiating a pact before finally agreeing to a sweeping multinational deal this year. Mr. Trump, who has demanded that any such deal benefit the United States, is unlikely to rejoin the Trans-Pacific Partnership without further concessions for what he has criticized as a terrible agreement. That could complicate talks, since Japan maintains that it has already given all the concessions it could, said William A. Reinsch, a trade expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

So in order correct all the Negative impacts of this Trade War with China, which President Trump is DIRECTLY responsible for. The President going to bail them out with taxpayer dollars from the Commidity Credit Corp.

But such a program would be time-consuming and costly and would come as the budget deficit continues to increase. The easiest way to help them is to avoid a trade war with China in the first place.

All of this nonsense because this President doesn't understand a THING about economics or the harms of his haphazardly implemented twitter ramblings and policy proposals.  I'm sick of all the "winning". Aren't you?

dm2754 I forgot the time President Obama directly caused chaos in a private sector field that required a tax payer funded bailout to fix.  If I'm mistaken please let me know.

I bet you they don't let Trump unattended in the Air Force One cockpit.  He would start pushing buttons and flipping switches willy nilly like a small child.

TPP bad, Trump leaves TPP, TPP completes without our feedback, Trade War, Commidities prices drop dramatically See soybean, pigs, corn, farmers now have little to no profit or are running negative now.  Trump destroys the midwest industry, now needs to renegotiate because he screwed everything up; yet I doubt any of his supporters care 1 iota that he caused this entire thing to spiral out of control b ecause he's an idiot.

normalfreak2 It's all part of the master plan *wink wink* "the art of the deal."  He's like a grandmaster of chess putting pieces in the right spot and... ahahahahaha, yeah, no.  Fucking amateur hour here.

First the TPP was severely biased towards the US, so the US leaves(?).  Then the remaining countries salvage the deal and apparently ironed out a few issues like with IP and various enforcement mechanisms, then sign.  Now Trumpy wants back in and is told it might be possible but to accept the conditions already stated.

I smell a Nobel Prize in the future (/s).

I think the thing to recall here is that the TPP was always a transpacific thing.  It centered on those countries and was primarily there concern.

Obama was keen to join because just in JOINING we would have a voice in their discussion allowing us to at least try and get some concessions for the American consumer and our companies.

Now, those same countries will go forward with their trade pact and do whatever they want and America will have ZERO say in it.  It's a safe bet that we will come out worse for not joining.

It is not the 1950s anymore, the world does not revolve around the wishes of the US and we need to wake up and appreciate that fact.

daegog correct.

China is not a party to the TPP. That's the whole point. It's to reduce dependence of the members on trade with China and bring the parties closer to America.

Trump, facing a trade war with China gets told trade wars are actually bad and hard to win and he's nixed the TPP,  the one thing he needs to balance Chinese trade power. So he flip flops.

China, meanwhile is deep into the Belt and Road programme, which turns China to the West (i.e. not America) in search of new trade partners, so it is less dependent on U.S. trade. China is close to surpassing the U.S. in economic might and influence and will undermine the Dollar as the world's global currency.

Rejoining the TPP is good for America, but not nearly as good as not fucking with the negotiations in the first place. You'll go back in on weaker terms.

daegog Well this President is so ignorant on basic facts he's already put us behind the 8 ball.  Any leverage we had going into this is all gone.  Those 11 Countries already negotiated the deal without us.  Now we have to come in AGAIN and renegotiate.  Remember Trump said the deal was bad before, how can he get a better deal now that he's coming late to the party?  This whole thing is stupid.
