Bathroom Hand-Dryers Suck In Feces Spores, Then Blow Them Back Out Onto Your Hands

Submitted by: daegog 3 months ago in News & Politics Science Weird

A new study in Applied and Environmental Microbiology conducted microbial surveys of the bathrooms at the University of Connecticut (where the study's lead authors are based) to investigate whether hand-dryers were sucking in potentially infectious microbes and then spraying them all over everything, as had been observed in earlier studies.

They were.

The full cycle goes like this: when you flush a toilet that doesn't have a lid, the turbulence of the flush sends fecal particles into the air, where they hover in a miasmic cloud; when the dryers switch on, they pull these particles in through their intake, heat them up, and spray them onto your moist hands and other moist, hospitable surfaces where their bacteria can thrive.

New research where have these people been? This has been known all my life and I'm 63 years old. Not necessarily a germaphobe, but I don't  touch bathroom doors if I can help it that's how you pick up colds and such (not to mention touching a door after someone left that did not wash his hand eeeooowww), after I wash my hands and dry them on a paper towel I use it to open the door and then throw it out. As far as money goes it has  an antibacterial built into it.  And just washing your hands regularly during the day will make a huge difference, and keep them off you face and grow a beard, that surprisingly helps too.

I never really bought into the whole fear of germs, thing. Our bodies are literal bacteria factories and we worry about what is on the door handle or that we just took a piss? Eh, there are more important things to worry about.

doiknowyou I'll get the occasional seasonal sinus thing, but as far as something viral or flu-like... nada.  Haven't been sick in almost 25-30 years now.

Very true. Every time you smell a fart you're inhaling someone's feces particles into your nose.
MythBusters had an episode on testing feces contact in toothbrushes

Rather misleading.  Fecal Matter is all around you, even if you're not in the bathroom.

So, a dryer that is designed to circulate air, even outside of a bathroom, has a good chance of re-circulating fecal matter.
