Reddit Admits To Removing A "Few Hundred" Russian Propaganda Accounts

Submitted by: littlemissqt 6 months ago in News & Politics Tech

Reddit Russian propaganda + Angry white college Bros (Cheap tiki torches) = Trump presidency.

Reddit admitted it has "found and removed a few hundred accounts" associated with Russian propaganda, one week after it was confirmed the Kremlin-backed Internet Research Agency, or Troll Farm, used the platform during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Reddit’s CEO Steve Huffman, writing under the username Spez, outlined both direct propaganda, such as troll accounts using the platform, and indirect propaganda, like subreddits such as r/The_Donald repeatedly linking to Russian Twitter troll account @TEN_GOP.

“Given the recent news, we’d like to share some of what we’ve learned,” he wrote.

How funny would it be if Twitter/Facebook/reddit ect banned all the suspected American propoganda accounts that have been trying to  influence the rise in the far right in Europe, and then publish the figures...

AdrianC So you don't care that Putin is truly trying to attack and destabilize our democracy? Whether they did enough to actually get Trump elected is debatable. Clinton was a terrible candidate. What is not under debate is that the Russians deliberately attacked our election and will do it again. Anyone who doesn't believe that is ignoring the facts cannot call themselves a patriot and is complicit in the Russian attacks at best. At worst, they are a traitor and should be treated as such.

PosisDas If Putin got Trump elected in order to destabilize the US, he did a shit job of it. He should have pushed for Clinton to win.
I find it absolutely amazing that people are shocked that other countries would want to interfere in US politics (or the US doing that with other countries for that matter) to push their own agenda. How long have you people had your heads up your asses?

PosisDas This is simply the first time it has gotten media attention. It has happened since there was an internet. USA has done it also since the beginning. They definitely need to do something about it.

bubba5658 Definitely no argument here about the U.S. and other countries trying to meddle in the affairs of other countries. I'm just not sure if it has ever been quite so large and systematic as the Russians did to our last election. At least not some major power toward another major power during modern times.

I just have this strong suspicion that the Trump administration was complicit, if not actually colluded with the Russians to help secure the election. Why else would a number of Trump officials conveniently "forget" dozens if not hundreds of combined meetings with Russian officials when initially submitting their security clearance forms? It's a big reason why eventually their temporary Top Secret clearance was permanently downgraded. Also, Congress OVERWHELMINGLY voted to increase sanctions on Russia due to their interference with out election (it's one of the things we are actually doing about it). However, Trump hasn't enacted the sanctions for some reason...  makes you think.

Also, another thing we are doing about it is removing the known Russian troll/propaganda accounts from our social media.

PosisDas You do know that the Obama administration was informed in 2015 that Russians were online and trying to hack into government systems including the DNC, right? this is the first time it has been heavily reported as they try and pin it on the current administration. The dems just didn't think it would matter, I suppose.

monkwarrior They are not censoring individuals. That's the key. They are removing Russian state sponsored accounts whose sole purpose is to push their own agenda on the United States, get people elected who would either be destabilizing to our democracy and/or would bow to what the Russians want.

This is NOT about censoring individual voices. It is about combating the Russian ATTACK on our democracy.

PosisDas Your democracy is already destablized without their help.  This is like a red herring: "we can be better if the Russians don't meddle on reedit and facebook".  In fact it's pretty pathetic.

Your nation is in free fall due to it's own devices, not the fault of others.  Oh, and for being a brute on the world stage, especially to Russia.  What goes around comes around.

This move is the chicken's move if you ask me.

Gerry1of1   Going the Devil's advocate route, I completely agree. It is like if someone wanted a cake for a special occasion, but the bakers did not want to make it. They should just go make their own.

Gerry1of1 yeah it's a public site, so censor is censor.  if they want it private invite they can easily do that, it'll die too.

monkwarrior    It's a privately owned business.
Just like Sears or McDonald's. Both of which would not
put out controversial content in their domain.
Being public access does not take away the owners rights.

Gerry1of1 It would be no different than if someone went to the store and they had a sign up "before you come into our store you have to prove you're not Russian by showing our security officers your birth certificate, and if you are you're barred".   Sort of like what happened in your nation not even a century ago, where they had signs up that said "Whites Only"

daegog You can hardly call the current russian junta for communist, they are pointing more in the facist direction. And their goal is mostly to undermine US credibility and authority in the eyes of the rest of the world. And they seem to be very successfull at that.

wolladude Russian Junta!!! LMAO you people just don't get it do you? You are so far deluded that you actually believe that this country needs any help destroying itself? You call for Russian/Chinese style censorship to combat what you've been told is a Russian media "attack". You fucking rubes fall into line without so much as a "please, thank you".
