The mall in the thumbnail looks like Fairlane, in Dearborn, Mi. Ford headquarters just across from it.

CodeJockey You are right, it looks a lot like fairlane.

Fairlane was really hurting in the early 2000s, but some new management came in and its really turned around, its always packed now like back in the 80s.

daegog The photo looks like the tram was still there, about 84 or earlier.

My highschool GF's best friend was, umm..., caught... with BF, under the stairs, on the left...

I probably had a very different 80s to you. Playing golf and cricket, learning aerobatics and living in a school that looked a lot like Hogwarts. I went to a mall maybe every few months and just to buy food. No wait, maybe it was a supermarket.

Nostalgia-projection. Hardly anyone (percentage wise) spent time at the mall, but those that did remember it that way because their friends were there. My brother and I spent it at 7-11 playing Ms. Pac Man, and we had to walk 6 miles to get there.

Though at least it wasn't in the snow, backwards and uphill both ways. He did have a perm though, which was totally 80's, but is still the best guitarist I've ever met and that sold it back then. Also spear bald now. Somehow I'm not. Genetics are odd. Short sentences for emphasis.

Man we loved that 7-11. Spy hunter... Gauntlet... Street fighter... They kept it up to date. Now it specializes in drug paraphernalia, getting robbed at gunpoint and hiring social rejects that hate customers. Ah well...

profworm When you only pay minimum wage, you get minimum service. I don't understand how people are so ignorant of this. It's an immutable law of the universe, what goes around comes around.

The megamalls af the 80s replaced downtown areas as the social centers of America.  It was the culmination of the urban exodus that started when GIs came home from WWII.  Now malls are dwindling while city (and urban) centers are reviving.
