White House Doesn't Deny Trump Actually Used The Words "Shithole Countries" In Immigration Talks

Submitted by: fancylad 8 months ago in News & Politics

Earlier this afternoon, the White House responded to reports that Trump privately disparaged “shithole countries” by touting the president’s immigration proposals. In a statement, White House spokesman Raj Shah did not deny that Trump made the remark. The Washington Post first reported that Trump asked lawmakers:

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

Trump was referring to attempts to restore allowances for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations. “Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people,” Shah said. The New York Timeslater reported that Trump asked that Haitians be left out of any proposal: “Why do we want people from Haiti here?”

The Chicago Tribune reports that at least two people who were in on the meeting verified that Trump did make the remarks. Any idea who the informant might be?

People from countries like Haiti want to come here to get away from the conditions in there country.  People in countries like Norway don't want to come to the US cause things are better where they are.

President Trump is actually right.  Why do we keep flooding our country with immigrants from a few war torn terrorist rich shithole countries?

From an article: http://thefederalist.com/2018/01/12/haiti-werent-shithole-citizens-wouldnt-need-refugee-status-u-s/

"Let’s be clear about one thing here: Haiti is a shithole. I’ve been there twice. It has a cholera epidemic thanks to the United Nations and a burgeoning child sex trafficking problem thanks to the predilections of evil people. It is really a hellish place. But the whole point of the temporary status welcoming immigrants from these countries is based on them being real shitholes – places so dangerous and awful that we won’t send refugees from them back to the countries because they’ll probably die, or worse. That’s the whole point of granting this policy in the first place."

Trump said something dumb, oh well! It isn't a lie though, most of these 'refugee nations' are horrible places, but that doesn't mean America has to throw its doors wide open and accept millions of them.

Even the statue poem calls them "wretched refuse". That's insulting to the actual people, not their nation.
Calling a nation by an accurate term may not be popular, but it's the truth.

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Whatever.
One would hope a leader of a nation could control impulsive behavior, or at least be diplomatic or, i dunno, presidential - instead of being a raging shithole.

captkangaroo It was a private meeting, it was not a podium speech...
You think Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush or even Reagan didn't say stupid shit IN PRIVATE?
Hell, Obama said disparaging things about Americans in his PUBLIC speeches... Hillary did too.
Apples to oranges: Trump's ALLEGED (where's the proof?) slighting of OTHER nations (which are indeed shitholes) VS Democrat leadership insulting huge % of American citizens.
Perspective is required, but the MSM has none of that!

Are you expecting a President to be PERFECT in every way 24/7/365? And what about Clinton??? Or Nixon??? Do you apply this equally to all or is it selective???

Please supply these alleged instances of other presidents saying such disparaging things - THEN explain how and why that would make THIS president's words acceptable, because as an adult that owns responsibility for what i say and do, i not accept the infantile excuse that reasons if everyone else is doing it, it must somehow be okay.

captkangaroo "You did not build that... someone else built that..."
"Deplorable" (it's far worse than that, look it up)

ALLEGED PRIVATE CONVERSATION vs recorded public speech (pre-written and pre-approved as an official position)
Get it?

What i am hearing from you is that you are imagining the people you mentioned have said said horrible, unpresidential things.
Okay, got it.
I notice you do not deny that it is childish to say stupid things then, when called out on it, claim that others do it too - no, you just stick with the others do it too.

captkangaroo Not imagining, there's plenty of video and more to back my claims up. That's all you have? I'm "imagining" documented facts?? Lolz!
Where is your video? None? Just the word of one "anonymous leaker" and a proven Democrat liar?
I have never denied that IF Trump said that? it was stupid, no doubt about it. You are wrong about that, so stop it.

It may be TRUE but not a wise way to phrase it :-) So he made a mistake. IF it happened.

So don't pretend I'm "denying" it: I'm demanding you PROVE it: it is an accusation, not a fact, at this point. What about "innocent until proven guilty"? That only applies to Democrats? Huh?

My point is: if Trump is "bad evil wrong racist" for saying this 'off the cuff'? So are Obama and Hillary for saying far worse things ON PURPOSE.
You disagree? How? Why?

Supply one documented fact. Just one. With the verifiable source.
Extra exclamation points do not count as verification - just so you know.

captkangaroo Wait, are you denying that Obama said "you didn't build that"? In public, on purpose?
Or that Hillary called a large % of Americans "deplorable"? in public, on purpose?

For just two examples, there are hundreds of politicians saying thousands of stupid things from every party! Why have a riot over one single slip-up?
Q: Do you actually believe all former Presidents were perfect 24/7/365?

IF he actually said it? It still doesn't matter because it's the truth. Those governments have turned those nations into shit-holes. Hundreds of politicians have referred to them as "hell holes" before, it's not a big deal.

Wait - you are comparing one president saying, "You didn't build that", to another president saying, "Why do we want them here, their country is a shithole"?
You seriously think these are comparable?
Judging by you, Trump voters ARE deplorable - YOU are deplorable. There. I said it - do i get to get away with it even though i am not a politician?

5cats, “You did not build that.”

If you have to start your rebuttal with a statement taken completely out of context, you automatically lose the argument.

markust123 You are making a joke, right? Lolz!
ALLEGED remark = proven!
Actual factual remark = context!!! No he didn't mean that he meant something else!!!
(Edit: removed insulting word :-)

You cannot even deny the facts, but you refuse to admit they exist? Why should anyone pay attention to you?

Here are some reactions to the "shithole" comment...one of these things is not like the other...

__

"President Trump's comments are yet another confirmation of his racially insensitive and ignorant views. It also reinforces the concerns that we hear every day, that the President's slogan Make America Great Again is really code for Make America White Again." — Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

__

"I look forward to getting a more detailed explanation regarding the President's comments. Part of what makes America so special is that we welcome the best and brightest in the world, regardless of their country of origin." — Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

__

Trump's comments are "unkind, divisive, elitist, and fly in the face of our nation's values. This behavior is unacceptable from the leader of our nation." — Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, whose family came from Haiti.

__

"The United States' position as a moral leader throughout the world has been thoroughly damaged by the continuous lowbrow, callous and unfiltered racism repeatedly espoused by President Trump. His decision to use profanity to describe African, Central American and Caribbean countries is not only a low mark for this president, it is a low point for our nation." — Statement from the NAACP.

__

"President Trump has been consistently honest about the white nationalism behind his immigration policies. His latest salvo is directly contrary to the decision Congress made in 1965 to do away with the racist per-country quotas of the past and bring our immigration policies in line with the civil rights era." — Lorella Praeli, American Civil Liberties Union director of immigration policy and campaigns.

__

"Immigrants from countries across the globe — including and especially those from Haiti and all parts of Africa — have helped build this country. They should be welcomed and celebrated, not demeaned and insulted." — Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.

__

"We can now we say with 100% confidence that the President is a racist who does not share the values enshrined in our Constitution or Declaration of Independence." — Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill.

__

"He's demonstrated himself to be unfit, unknowledgeable about the history of this country and the history of contributions that immigrants, particularly Haitian immigrants, have made to this country." — Illinois state Sen. Kwame Raoul, whose Haitian parents who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1950s.

__

"He's trying to win me back." — Conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

kalron27 "We can now we say with 100% confidence that the President is a racist who does not share the values enshrined in our Constitution or Declaration of Independence."

That seems a little like re-writing history. Those documents were written by slave owning racists and gave nothing but lip service to equality while solidifying the institution of slavery.

Informant? It was a meeting with GOP and DEM members of congress. He had to know it would be on the news they second the walked out the door.  Does this surprise anyone? From the first primary debate on it was obvious this guy had no PC filter and didn't care, was even proud of it. His base loves it. He talks like most people and doesn't care about "being presidential". He didn't coin the term shithole, people have been referring to Third World countries as such for as long as I can remember. Every person in the military I’ve ever known was stationed in or served in a shithole country. Get over it, his base will love it and it will drive those that can't stand him into a further tizzy. That's his MO. And they are shitholes.

trimble god forbid one of our solider's dies in one of these "shithole" nations and they decide not to cooperate because of this.

The President, and you it appears,  can't think more than 2 steps ahead.  This does NOTHING to assist our foreign policy.  There's nothing good that comes from saying this.  It's a play to his base, all this does is further tell you the type of man he is.  He has removed all  doubt that he is in fact a racist, whether or not he knows it or believes it.

normalfreak2 Look, I'm just giving my take on this story, not defending or condemning just saying this is classic Trump. Racist? I don't know about that, these places aren't shitholes because of the color of their peoples skin, they are shitholes because of their governments.

He IS a genius. He was the first POTUS to implement the idea of electing a cunt so hatred and bigotry transcend bad behaviour and become a political viewpoint.

Very presidential. Such a great way to build bridges to other nations and ensure their goodwill in the future. ~eye roll~

If you think this kind of remark by the U.S. president is fine, there's something wrong with you.

squrlz4ever I agree. However, and please remember that I'm not a Trump supporter by any means, I believe that this was said in a closed meeting. If no one had made public comment on his inappropriate stupidity there would have been no (additional) damage to international relations. The people who were at the meeting should have kept their mouths shut, at least in that regard.

broizfam Your point is a good one. So far as I know, no one from the countries to which he was referring was present. That said, any president should know that such language, when expressed in a meeting, is going to leak out. Pretty much anything a president says while discharging his duties becomes a part of the public record.

It amuses me watching a news story, and the anchor is like "We won't say the word on this network" while it displays SH*THOLE in the quote on the screen.  That is pretty sh*tty self censoring there.  :P

Trump and his supporters are stupid ignoramuses.  Killing off the dumbest among us should not be a crime when critical retardation is reached.  So many dipshits ask "where should we draw the line?" My answer, asshole morons like Trump is THE line.

Fuck Trump, Fuck his supporters!

prichards114 A person can support his agenda and not support Trump. A person can also support Trump but not support this statement. I think otherwise mild conservatives are digging in their heels because everyone and their mother is going after this guy at every turn--and directly or indirectly insulting and alienating the ~63 million people who voted for him.
