[Photos] Some Of Evel Knievel's Greatest Jumps

Submitted by: fancylad 1 month ago in Entertainment Sports

50 years ago, Evel Knievel attempted to jump the fountains outside Caesars Palace (see the first photo), but the stunt went horribly wrong. Evel crashed and was left in a coma for a month, suffered a crushed pelvis, shattered femur, and fractures to his hips, wrist, and both ankles. While the jump was a fail, it went on to become one of Knievel's most popular events and made him more famous than ever. The jump was a fail, but ABC decided to air the jump anyway making him more famous than ever. The other photos of are his other famous jumps like the one over the Grand Canyon, Madison Square Garden, and the Los Angeles Coliseum.

(The last photo is of Robbie Knievel who tried to follow in dad's footsteps, but it was never the same.)

I always thought of Evel Knievel as the Motorcycle alter ego of Elvis.  Not exactly sure why.

I think the era of the daredevil came to an end with Evel Knievel. Not sure why, but I'd guess it has something to do with all the computerized special effects in movies that make real-life stunts mundane by comparison. Also, people don't flock to live performances or spectacles like they used to--they're too busy online with social media, it seems.

I feel like if you told some teen today about how Evel Knievel once jumped 20 Greyhound buses on a motorcycle, you'd instantly hear back something like, "Well, that's nothing. In The Fast and the Furious, two cars jumped over a semitrailer while the drivers were leaning out the windows shooting machine guns at--"

"Uhhh, you do know that was CGI, don't you?"

"I don't care, it was cool!"

Yes, I know I sound like an old fart here.

Don't be that way. In fact, you can use your nut farts to propel yourself just like this guy.

I don't think he jumped the Grand Canyon, it was the Snake River Canyon.  That one was on a rocket powered bike and it went horribly wrong also.

woodyville06 Yes, you are correct. He couldn't get permission for the Grand Canyon so he jumped the Snake River Canyon..... but the rocket/cycle parachute deployed too early so it was a fail. His career never recovered but his legacy lives on .

Gerry1of1 Ya I remember that it just looked like he left the ramp and pulled the parachute right away it just looked like a ploy to make money and not a real attempt. He use to come in to a bar I frequented in Clearwater Fl. after he retired (he also tried to open a bar across from the football, or baseball stadium in Tampa  never came to be though) He was kind of a dick.
