Inside The Freakishly Fast World Of Robot Sumo

Submitted by: fancylad 2 weeks ago in Sports Tech

From Great Big Story: Welcome to the lightning-fast world of robot sumo, where two robots battle it out for mechanical supremacy. But, keep your eyes peeled—robots that take years to build can be decimated within mere seconds. Robot sumo has developed into a furiously competitive sport in Japan, with participants spending years building their autonomous machines. Just ask Takahiro Ito, a robot designer and builder who spends 360 days a year working on his craft. It's a demanding sport that requiring extreme dedication, all for a few seconds of glory.

I love robot competitions, but this pales in comparison to Battle Bots. The matches end too quickly and there's no saws, claws or flame-throwers.

johndplorable My robot costume idea probably wouldn't work so well in Battle Bots.  There's too much risk of my opponent slamming a pick-axe into my foot.

Sort of like watching HolyGod or Megrendel debate MonkWarrior. (To be perfect, the losing robot would have to play a recording saying, "Once again, my opponent has crashed and burned.")

squrlz4ever for that simile to work one of the robots would have to have a microprocessor and some form of a program, but then it will chose to fart and claim that its maker is the coffee pot.

These have to be pre-programmed and not RC right? I think the most interesting thing about these would be the tracking software.

toetagmodel2 looks like it from the speed of the actions, as opposed to other robot battles that have a human component. Here, sensors and algorithms to recognize the black circle and stay in, to look for the other guy and to fight it off the mat.

bearbear01 That's a lot of complicated sensing and calculating in very short times. I can see this leading to breakthroughs in autonomous vehicles and sensing / tracking software. Interesting stuff.

toetagmodel2 What's a little unsettling to think about is how similarly a homicidal war robot would behave, at least from the standpoint of speed and efficiency. I'd like to think the day will never come, but that flies in the face of history.

squrlz4ever The secret to shutting off killbots is to send wave after wave of men at them until they reach their predetermined kill limit!

toetagmodel2 Aha! A clever solution. We must remember that. :)

squrlz4ever It's straight out of Zap Branigan's Big Book Of War.

toetagmodel2 I'm not into it, so I would not be giving these folks their proper dues, but with faster processing, it seems that it becomes fast brute force and physical design. I like sweepy there in the video. He quickly finds the other guy and goes sweep sweep sweep sweep until it detects the edge of the mat. I'm sure there is more in the secret sauce of course. With vehicular, there would be a lot of reaction and scenario considerations.

bearbear01 Why not a spinner that just anchors itself and attacks by spinning a shell at high speeds to brush away attackers. I guess the strategy interests me too. NEEEERRRRRDDDDDSSSSS!!!!!

toetagmodel2 That's a pretty good idea.  But I think I have an even better one.  I dress up in a robot costume and just punt my opponent out of the ring.

skeeter01 I think I would pay money to see that...

toetagmodel2 for the other robot fighting competitions that could work, but in this case of sumo, it has to push the other buggers off the mat. Nerd fun is awesome :)

bearbear01 So there are rules? I never considered that.
