Sen. Al Franken To Resign "In The Coming Weeks" Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations

Submitted by: fancylad 1 week ago in News & Politics

During his resignation speech on the Senate floor, Al Franken said the "irony" that he's stepping down while accused serial sexual harasser Trump is president and Senate candidate Roy Moore, accused of sexual misconduct with underage girls, has widespread GOP support. Both are accused of predatory sexual behavior.

“I of all people am aware that there is some irony in the fact that I am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape (the "grab 'em by the pussy" video) about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office and a man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls is running for Senate with full support of his party,” he said. At least 16 women have accused Trump of sexual harassment or assault, while Moore has been accused of sexually pursing teenaged girls when he was in his 30s.

Franken announced his resignation after eight women accused him of groping or trying to forcibly kiss them.

This is a brilliant first step for the democratic party. They will now claim the high ground leaving republicans with 2 options: remove Roy Moore and more importantly, the president due to similar actions, or keep towing the line and look like sexual predators. Lose power now or lose power later when the overwhelming majority of voters with vaginas are reminded who the pro-harassment party is.

I am all for cleaning house on both sides. Certain actions have to have consequences. And there is no statute of limitations on public opinion.

toetagmodel2 I agree I think Franken's response is two pronged.  A it's the right thing to do, B) This really makes the GOP look anti women.  The D's are planning on a huge Woman turnout for the midterms and 2020.  If it works that way the GOP is in a serious predicament.  If Judge Roy Moore wins the GOP will be the party of pussy grabber and child molesters, no way around it.  The commercials and advertisements write themselves.

normalfreak2 Not really an advantage to have morale high ground over people who have no moral compass, some of them still defend milo's thoughts on sex with minors.

I can't believe Conservatives are espousing this as guilt.  Since when do Conservatives throw away due process?

Honestly, if accusations are all that's needed nowadays we(MEN) are all in deep shit.

Also having an honest conversation and examination of facts.  NOTHING in any of Franke's accuser's thus far do I find any hard proof of him doing something illegal.  Maybe he did Maybe he didn't.  I saw a Frat humor photo of him pretending to grab a woman's boobs which HE POSED for and smiled on camera.

He's either the dumbest sexual predator EVER to pose and smile for a camera or he made a poor decision at an attempt to be funny.

Sorry I find him to simply have taken a photo in poor taste.  Everything else is accusation with no proof for or against.

When it's a Democrat.
Meanwhile, Trump and Roy Moore could suck each other's dicks on the Whitehouse lawn and have it broadcast live nationwide and the Republicans would find a way to ignore it.
You know, "Fake news!"

Franken and Weiner. Why is it that american federal politicians who actually get some traction in fighting against corruption are also sexual harrassers? And are named after sausages?

Lesson learned. If you're ever accused of harassment, it's better to call the woman a slut who deserved what was coming to her than to own up to it and work to pass legislation to prevent it from happening to anyone else.

It's the Republican way.

IS AMERICA GREAT YET?

trimble At a microscopic level (dealing with friends, family, coworkers, etc.) I always look for a 3rd option and I hate the choice between two evils. But at a macroscopic level, I realize that I only have limited power in life to nudge things one way or another. Deal with the world the way it is, not the way you wish it to be.

johncourage Gerrymander local districts and work over the electoral college so you can get fewer votes for Congress, fewer votes for senate, fewer votes for president and still win all 3.

That's the Republican way. Literally.

Also helps if you can convince imbeciles that the news is fake and voter fraud is rampant. Then you can question anything and they will believe you.

bliznik No it is still the best system to provide equality to a nation of states. I also like that election rule that some state has for governor where if there are three candidates and no candidate gets over 50% then there is another election between the top two.

And of course I would still like both systems even if a Democrat won. I wouldn't blame the system for the voters ignorance.

Not when a majority of districts are gerrymandered to artificially inflate the voting power of one party over the other.

I'm not blaming the system for the voter's ignorance. I'm blaming the system for being susceptible to tinkering without effective checks and balances.

bliznik I agree districts should be set for probably 50 year periods. To say that only Republicans engage in gerrymandering districts would be a lie.

True, but to say that Republicans and Democrats equally engage in gerrymandering is also a lie.

I mean, both men and women engage in rape, but men overwhelmingly rape more often than women do.

johncourage hahaha. Fuck off. The only reason you think it is "brilliant" is because it allowed the person you wanted to win to steal the election 2 of the last 5 elections. Any system that gives one American's vote more weight than another is completely broken. If Bush and Trump would have won the popular vote and Gore and Hillary would have been elected conservatives would have burned the country down.

The fly-over state's love it because it is the only time they ever matter. How convenient the fly-over states are all red. Good system. Give the shittiest places where nobody wants to live the most power.

14 of the 20 least densely populated states are red states. That's just a fact. Clearly people don't want to live there. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't true no matter what Trump says.

Do you live within 150 miles of where you were born?

You obviously have no coherent argument against the electoral college.

johncourage Of course they deserve representation. They deserve equal representation. Does a person in Wyoming deserve MORE representation than a person in California?

Because unless you think so you have no coherent argument for the electoral college.

Well, this is a big bag of shut the fuck up delivered directly into Kellyanne Conway's mouth.  Between this and Conyers actually listening to public opinions and resigning might work in favor of the Dems for the special elections that will follow.  Unfortunately I don't think it is going to effect the Roy Moore outcome, he will most likely take the election because liberals are worse than child predators and sexual assaults...
