The way I understand it, it's not necessarily a badge of honor and that Times own criteria is that it be the person that most dominated the news media good or bad during the year. i think it's pretty obvious to everyone who that is.

trimble Well, for the past few months at least, I'm thinking Time might well choose to bestow the title on "THE MALE SEXUAL PREDATOR." I mean, it's been an unrelenting part of every darn news cycle.

As I've said elsewhere, though, I think the criteria Time is using for awarding the distinction are wrong. Would I buy an issue of Time to read about "The Male Sexual Predator"? Hell no. Would I buy an issue of Time to read about the one individual the magazine's editors think has had the most positive influence on the world? Probably.

squrlz4ever Ta-da! I called it--only I was thinking Time would bestow the the title on "The Male Sexual Predator," not "The Silence Breakers." Makes sense that they'd focus on the happier side of that coin. Bestowing the title on the predators would probably have resulted in a fair amount of outrage and possibly protests of some sort.

It is at great personal risk too, he could 'fall out of a tower' anytime and few would ask questions...

to me it sounds like an award or an honor. like, Hey! you are person of the year!!!

they should do a separate one called asshole of the year and put all the assholes in the running for that one.

my pick for person of the year is kap!

The criteria for Time's Person of the Year are:

"for better or for worse... has done the most to influence the events of the year"

Like it or not that is Trump. Nobody else comes close.

holygod The criteria is who ever will increase revenue. This has always been a marketing gimmick and nothing more.

holygod I was just reading the Wikipedia article on Time's "Person of the Year." It's too late now, I suppose, but I think the designation should be limited to the most positively influential person in the world. Life's grim enough; I really don't want to spend more time reading about terrible people than I do already. Also, I dislike it when they award the designation to a collective noun or an inanimate object, such as "Middle Americans" (1969), "The Computer" (1982), or "You" (2006).

One person, male or female, whom Time's editors think has had the most positive influence globally. If they redefined the award like that, it would be a lot more interesting. I'd probably even buy a copy of the issue every year, in fact.

squrlz4ever You think?

trimble I do think, yes.

Incidentally, the Wikipedia article had an interesting fact: Time's editors started the "Man of the Year" award in December 1937, partly because it allowed them to cover up for an error in judgment earlier that year when they didn't put Charles Lindbergh on the cover after his transatlantic flight.

squrlz4ever Slim Lindbergh was the first TIME Man of the Year in 1927 fyi when the epic flight took place. Why would they want to do it again 10 years later? Think you'd better fact check that.

HCRyde Augh. Typo and I didn't catch it. I'm glad you did. Yes: 1927 not 1937. Thanks.

profworm Yup. But you cannot make an omelette without breaking a few eggs eh? He had to do all that to consolidate power or he'd just be another wanna-be.
And it isn't like he butchered them all, they're "imprisoned" in a 5-star hotel :p Not the Bastille!

As I understand it TIME person of the year is not the nicest person but the person who impacted the world most.  {Hitler and Stalin have both been person of the year} I'm thinking Donald Trump. He's pissed off more people, and motivated more people against him than the others combined.

Gerry1of1 Only if you view the US as the center of the world. He's made a lot of noise and pissed a lot of people off, but he himself has accomplished almost nothing due to his lack of ability and knowledge of how to actually be a president. He can't even fill his cabinet for more than a couple weeks without someone getting fired.

The other branches are making headway in spite of him, not because of him. If anything they might have been more successful without him in office.

jarred I think their angle with this is, who's the most talked about and influential -- good or bad influence. It's mostly, who was in the news most.

Male 10,378
jarred It doesn't have anything to do with being a good person, just having the most influence on the world. Trump was person of the year last year. Hitler was person of the year.
