waldo863 I suppose that could be true. Having worked for a large, well-to-do corporation for a long time, however, I can tell you my company would never expose itself to the legal risks of expecting employees to commute through that kind of a hazard, if they can possibly stay home.

squrlz4ever I would think that too but I also used to work for a large well-to-do corporation.  Here in South Texas, we don't get much snow or ice on the roads, but a few years ago, we actually did get some snow and the roads all iced over.  The whole city was practically shut down.  This large well-to-do corporation had a number you supposed to call if travel conditions made if dangerous for you to get to work to see if they expected you to come in or not.  Well, I called that number and it said we were expected to go in.  Those that did not go in, got written up.  One of them got fired because it was his third write-up.  

Personally, after calling the number and hearing that, I called my manager directly and his answer to me was, "We are here, come on in."  Meanwhile, since we never deal with snow/ice here, there is not salt or sand for the roads, no snow plows, nothing.  So I get in my car and head to work, never having had to drive on icy roads before.  Luckily, I made it there with no accidents, though there were about 5 near misses on my normally short 5 minute trip to work which took me nearly an hour because the route I normally took was closed and I had to go a really long way around.  When I get there, no manager.  When he finally showed up at about 1PM he said there was no way he would have gone out driving in that weather, yet he instructed me to and phrased it in such a way that I thought he was there.  

Point is, sometimes, it's not the company, but the manager.  He wasn't willing to drive in but did not do his job and update the system to let us know we should not come in, then penalized the people that did not show up, while he faced zero consequences for not being there.

Obviously, the manager was totally wrong in this case, but someone still got fired over it.  He even attempted a wrongful termination case, but never got anywhere with it.  Meanwhile, here it is 5-7 years later and that Manager is still there.

Sorry to hear about your experience there. Being stuck under a bad manager can affect every facet of your life. It's the worst. I've been there. The only thing that kept me sane was constantly reminding myself that people shift roles a lot at my company. Thankfully, I was out from under him in about 18 months time.

squrlz4ever Oh, and I forgot to mention that this company was based in CA and the Manager was from CA.  He moved here because he was given his own brand new branch here.  Guess that's kind of relevant since these fires were in CA.

I didn't get out from under him until I got fired for similarly stupid reasons.  Also found out later after talking to other people in the company I kept in touch with that due to him none of my applications to positions further up in the company got past his desk.  This could have meant he thought I wasn't ready for the job but, I was already doing the Assistant Manager's job for him, and he shoved a good portion of his paperwork off on me as well.  That's the job I was applying for at other branches in other cities, Assistant Manager.  The people that actually trained me, in another city, later told me they would have loved to have me there as the Assistant Manager as it was that position they trained me for already.  They already thought I was an Assistant Manager.  When theirs quit they would have loved to have me, but the application never made it past my managers desk.

Moving out was my only way to get out from under him too, because he was basically set to manage this branch until he retired.  He had no desire to move further up and basically worked his way up the ladder just to get to open a branch in a city he wanted to retire in so he could get moved there for free.  He was literally blocking my only way out from under him by not passing on my applications and he was never going to move.

Now I understand not all manager's are like this, but it does explain why some people would still be heading in to work because there are plenty of managers like this.

waldo863 Wow. Your situation puts mine in perspective. Thankfully, I didn't have it quite so bad.

Oddly enough, just yesterday I was thinking about managers in corporations and a related phenomenon. I'm sure it has a name, but I've forgotten it: There's a tendency for people to rise to their own level of incompetency. Meaning: People get promoted until they reach a position they aren't good at, at which point the promotions stop, and the person then stays at that level until retirement. Few corporate bureaucracies are willing to demote unless something outrageous has occurred. As a result, in a large company, 40% to 50% of the managers may be in their particular roles precisely because they aren't good at them.

Sounds like you were stuck under one of them.

squrlz4ever Yeah, most of the companies I have worked for would err on the side of caution and say don't come in.

They would never want to even consider risking some off the wall litigation because you felt like you were gonna get fired if you didn't drive thru that shit.

daegog I notice you said most, not all.  That would likely explain why the traffic was so light.  It was obviously only some people out.  I haven't been to LA in about a decade, but from what I remember, at no point in time was traffic on the 405 that light.  It does seem as though most did stay home, either because their companies told them to or because they refused to.

scheckydamon Best to keep on going and get out of there before the freeway became totally jammed and they were trapped on it for hours, as happened later.  They had to peel off cars in the front one at a time and send them back in the other direction.

Saw something similar myself Sunday morning in 2003, the first day of the Cedar fire in San Diego...
