9 Nations Have Agreed To Ban Fishing In The Arctic Ocean For At Least 16 Years

Submitted by: rumham 1 week ago in News & Politics

An excerpt from Science magazine: Nine nations and the European Union have reached a deal to place the central Arctic Ocean (CAO) off-limits to commercial fishers for at least the next 16 years. The pact, announced yesterday, will give scientists time to understand the region’s marine ecology—and the potential impacts of climate change—before fishing becomes widespread.

“There is no other high seas area where we’ve decided to do the science first,” says Scott Highleyman, vice president of conservation policy and programs at the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, D.C., who also served on the U.S. delegation to the negotiations. “It’s a great example of putting the precautionary principle into action.”

The deal to protect 2.8 million square kilometers of international waters in the Arctic was reached after six meetings spread over 2 years. It includes not just nations with coastal claims in the Arctic, but nations such as China, Japan, and South Korea with fishing fleets interested in operating in the region.

rumham You are a hate-monger. Nothing less than shame is expected of you.

You hate the indigenous people of the Arctic Circle who have lived there for thousands of years, their rights mean nothing! Fuck them eh?

Have you ever met any of them? I have. Case closed.

dm2754  i serioulsly doubt that small towns will be affected much at all. how much of that fishing do you think is done by lone fishermen with small boats. my bet is most of the fishing is done via large commercial fishing operations that can pluck massive amounts of sea life in short amounts of time

and these kinds of decisions wouldnt need to be made if humans were more responsible stewards of the areas that contain their livelyhoods.

imagine a farmer destroying his land from unsustainable farming practices, then just moving on to another plot when the land wont grow anything.

this is essentially what has been happening to our oceans worldwide

jarred So the indigenous peoples who actually LIVE there and depend maybe 75% of all their food on fishing, sealing and whaling can go take a flying leap eh? And move closer to a Wal Mart.
Nice!

You think those huge 'cannery' boats go anywhere near the icepack? I suggest you do some research and then modify your opinions...
Sure, there's some 'bulk fishing' going on, as there is in every square meter of the world's seas and oceans and lakes... but if this was truly an 'outright ban' then it would be a disaster...

I'm hoping that (like in many previous decisions) the actual indigenous people will have THEIR RIGHTS protected too... and be able to fish and whale for their subsistence.

5cats  apparently there are enough people in the 9 countries mentioned that think yes, commercial fishing vessels can navigate those waters, or else i doubt they would pass a resolution like this.

i however do hope this isnt pertaining to indigenous people, so long as they dont employ the same techniques that commercial operations employ

why anger? this is good.  the worst tthat will happen is that ot folks will have to wait 16 years to start raping this new fishing ground.

trimble bollocks to that. If everyone had a vege garden on even a small plot of land, and their house was hooked up to a rain water tank and governments planted fruit trees everywhere and cows and sheep were grown and eaten locally, and other types of small scale similar things in different cultures, we'd all be fine. there's plenty of food to go around, it's just badly managed.

5cats What? It's fecking true. Drive down the street, and street, see the trees planted on the side of the road? imagine if they were all fruit trees. Go to a park, see those plants there planted? imagine they were all vegetables. see everyones garden at their house? imagine they are all fruit trees and vegetable plants. see those kids in schools wasting their time playing sports, imagine those sports fields are gardens where the kids are learning how to grow food to feed themselves instead of chucking a ball around.See behind your house? see any water tank there collecting the rain that falls from the sky and you collecting it so that you can use it? (well, I wouldn't in America, without a fucking good filter- but thats another argument).See all the food that supermarkets throw away? see all the food that doesn't even make it to the supermarket because it's not perfect so they throw it away? There is so much waste and so much wasted opportunity everywhere. I personally have just planted about 30 fruit trees on my property, I will have so much fruit in a few years I am going to have that shit spilling out my door. I'm going to be giving that shit away. I'm sure a lot of the population of the world could be doing this, and that's just one idea.
