[Photos] The 1939 New York World's Fair

This was one of the big world fairs -- it was called 'The World of Tomorrow' and it seemed like we weren't far off from technical leaps and bounds.

One part of that world, another theme showcased throughout the fair, was “electrification”— the growing use of electricity to light and power not only factories and businesses, but also homes and public spaces. Photographer Peter Campbell captured many scenes from the fair in full color (a novelty still not in wide use).

#4 interesting fact: the parachute towers from the 1939 Worlds Fair were bought by the Army and erected at Ft Benning for Airborne School

#9 caught my attention: The Hot Mikado (NOT in Blackface!)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hot_Mikado_(1939_production)

At least the main star was actually Black...

Interesting stuff! I went to Expo 87 and it was really fun.

went to the NY worlds fair.  it was a hoot and a half.
Remember, this was BEFORE any internet.  so you were transported to a far away land with every new building you entered.  AND it was during the space race, where gee whiz science stuff was all the rage.
So you could go to the belgium exhibit, order a belgium waffle, and have an extrordinarily BIG waffle...with strawberries, and whipped cream!  OMG, who would have thought of that?
You could not get the same effect today....because everyone has seen all this stuff at the local mall so many times it is boring.
