CarMax Goes All In For '96 Honda Accord From Earlier This Week

Submitted by: daegog 1 week ago in Weird

Update: Remember the guy from the IAB post earlier this week who made a cool homemade commercial for his girlfriend's 1996 Honda Accord? It's a great video and worth seeing it if you haven't already. Well, apparently Carmax saw the video and are prepared to buy the car.

Well, assuming the cat's off the table, their offer for the car (and a few miscellaneous small items) is $15K. I'd say this was a smart move. That's a pittance for the publicity this gets them.

If, as Fancy seems to be alleging, they themselves produced the original video, well... they're sneaky little boogers, aren't they?

"Hi, I run CarMax and i love money.  We want to get cheap advertising, so i've decided that i am going to buy that car for 20,000 dollars.  I know it sounds stupid because the car isn't even worth 1/10th of that, but in the long run i think it's a cheaper deal than paying for advertising.  You see, the reason i'm responding to a viral ad this way is not only like i said, i love money, but i'm hoping that my own ad will go viral and help you decide to give me more of your money in the future.  Based on research of western media data, i've found that the way is through your feelings.  Now, I know that  some of you know how  completely dishonest ad is, but we are betting that most of you will at least pretend to like it, so we'll pretend it's serious to get their attention.  After all, didn't i tell you, i love money?" - a western media delusion tale.

Addendum: and by the looks of the youtube comments it appears many were caught.

Well played, Carmax. You actually had me on the hook with your little viral video campaign. I hope you're proud of yourselves.

fancylad Were they in on it from the start, or did they just recognize a great way to get in on someone else's viral ad?  Either way, pretty successful.
