My reaction to the two tables illusion:  O.O

For the disappearing square, the answer is that when you spread the center square along the outside edges it becomes extremely narrow.  The key difference is that the yellow extends slightly into the black when the white square is in the middle.

I made a model of one of these at work, with 10" to a side.  When turned so that the box was in the middle, the side was 10.04" long.
