Trump Administration Denies Endangered Protections For 25 Species

Submitted by: daegog 2 weeks ago in News & Politics

Eight of the 25 animals near extinction that Trump's not protecting.

The Trump Administration said that 25 species on the decline would not be listed as endangered, saying it “is not warranted at this time.” But USA Today says environmental groups are particularly worried about the Pacific walrus, one of the species that was rejected to be called endangered.

They say that because of the extensive loss of Arctic sea ice, the Walrus is losing its habitat. Noah Greenwald, endangered species director at the Center for Biological Diversity says the Trump Administration is “putting profits ahead of protecting endangered species”.

While Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski applauded the move saying that “...the population of Pacific walrus is robust and healthy, and has proven that it can adapt to the changing conditions in the Arctic." Greenwald calls Murkowski’s findings “bogus” and asserts that all 25 species not listed "are now one step closer to extinction.”

jeez i did not realize we had koala bears and penguins here in the United States!

USA trying to be world policeman again...total fail.  Let the local countries handle it...often whole African villages STARVE when the US passes some sort of endangered species crap, because they cull out the herd with one or two well funded hunts that feed the village for the whole year.

Bush was dumb, but seemed like a decent fella.

Trump is dumb AND an asshole. That is a dangerous combination.

I know he wants the blue ringed Tree Octopus taken off the endangered list because he wants to mine their forest habitat but that is a mistake. They will just take over areas inhabited by humans or even squirrels

Gerry1of1 It appears something got a bit messed up with the photos. Those eight animals are not on the list of 25 species for which the Trump administration is denying Endangered Species protection.

Here's a list of the 25 species:
  • 14 Nevada springsnail species
  • Barbour’s map turtle
  • Bicknell’s thrush
  • Big Blue Springs cave crayfish
  • Black-backed woodpecker: Oregon-California and South Dakota Black Hills populations
  • Boreal toad: Eastern population
  • Fisher: Northern Rocky Mountains population
  • Florida Keys mole skink
  • Great Sand Dunes tiger beetle
  • Kirtland’s snake
  • Pacific walrus
  • San Felipe gambusia

The Great Sand Dunes tiger beetle is found in Colorado. The beetle seen here is hugging the sand dune in the cool early morning hours to warm its body.... Okay, who am I kidding? I'm no David Attenborough. It's a beetle, I'm a squirrel, and it looks tasty.

Gerry1of1 I'm not trying to argue! It was an error in the story presentation, not anything wrong with your comment.

I am even willing to propose a unilateral Wooden Shoe Projectile ceasefire. I come in peace.

Gerry1of1 Now that is some weird fashion. Squirrel, elk, and narwhal boots.

Sad to say, hoomans have a long history of wearing squirrels on their feet. You know Cinderella's glass slipper? It's believed by some that in the early Medieval versions of the story, her slippers were made of squirrel fur, a common luxury footwear at the time. Over the course of centuries, the French for fur (vair) was misheard as the French for glass (verre) and thus the improbable and ethereal glass slipper was born.

Everybody wants our fluffiness!

Gerry1of1 Okay, I'll break it down.

  • Horn projecting from toe: Narwhal horn
  • Toe: American Red Squirrel head (taxidermied)
  • Body of boot extending up to the neck of the squirrel: Elk hide

Here's an elk hide that hasn't been cut (below).

Gerry1of1 Hmmm. I think you may be right about the unicorn horn. I have never seen a unicorn (or a narwhal, for that matter), so I was speaking on a subject of which I have little knowledge. You know, like life generally.

You're asking too much of a squirrel without a porpoise! ~sobs~
