The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 2018 Nominees

Submitted by: fancylad 1 week ago in Entertainment

The bands up for induction for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced this morning. There are some deserved artists up for the honor, but there are some question marks, too... The Moody Blues? Any I can't believe a band that inspired punk like the MC5 are just getting the recognition now -- they literally inspired Iggy and the Stooges.

  1. Depeche Mode
  2. Bon Jovi
  3. Kate Bush
  4. Radiohead
  5. LL Cool J
  6. Sister Rosetta Tharpe
  7. Dire Straits
  8. The Zombies
  9. The Moody Blues
  10. Eurythmics
  11. The Cars
  12. J. Geils Band
  13. Link Wray
  14. Rufus featuring Chaka Kahn
  15. Nina Simone
  16. Rage Against The Machine
  17. The Meters
  18. MC5

Rock evolves, sure. But I don't think Rap is rock n roll. It's something different like jazz or country/western. Rappers should not be in the Rock n Roll hall of fame

Gerry1of1 I rappers are in it, they might as well go in the other direction and also induct Enrico Caruso, Beethoven, and Og.

The Moody Blues are categorized as an English Rock band.  Why would they not be considered rock n' roll?  I hear them played on the Classic Rock station here frequently.  How is that not rock 'n roll?

I'm curious now, which ones do you think are deserving?

waldo863 Me personally? Link Wray, MC5, Rage, Nina Simone are all solid -- they paved the way for bands that followed them. They were all originals.

Bands like Radiohead, Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, Eurythmics, and The Cars are all derivative -- they didn't really add anything new to their genres, if anything, they rode the coattails of bands before them.

Bands that added something original to the rock landscape: The Smiths, Slayer, Motorhead, Roxy Music or Brian Eno, Devo, Joy Division or New Order, Pixies, The Cure.

fancylad See, I've never even heard of those guys.  I live in San Antonio and bands like Metallica and AC/DC got started here.  Hell, The Doobie Brothers have a song called China Grove, about a Town called China Grove that's here, right outside San Antonio.  Austin is also a big town for Music.  So big, artists from here in San Antonio claimed they were from Austin.  You want to hear good rock music, head to Austin on a Friday/Saturday night and go to 6th Street.  We know good rock music down here.  Never heard of 3 of the 4 you mentioned.

Hall of Fame is just that, a Hall of Fame.  Here's the definition of Fame for you:
fame
fām/
noun

  1. the condition of being known or talked about by many people, especially on account of notable achievements.
Are you gonna try to tell me The Moody Blues are not well known and talked about?

Looks to me like the had #1, Top 10 and Top 40 Hits in both the UK and USA.  That mean they fit the definition of Famous.  Let's look at Some of the ones you think should be there:

rage is actually there, and I've heard of them.  They were huge here.

So of the 4 you mentioned, I've only even heard of one, in a place where Rock is pretty big, and the other 3 have never even had a Top 40 Hit.

Funny, I've never even heard of them before now and they don't ever appear on any charts, so they must not be famous.  Influential, maybe.  Famous, certainly not.

fancylad I think you have the Hall of Fame confused with the Hall of Influence.  The rub for die hards like you is that wildly popular bubblegum bands who have other people write their music slide right in while the true artists suck on it.

By the way, is Milli Vanilli inducted yet?

fancylad   Dire Straits, Eurythmics, and The Cars are not derivative and deserve recognition. Bon Jovi was very popular, although not a choice of mine.

I've never heard of a lot of these acts, and others that I have heard of aren't what I call rock and roll

fancylad But it's the Hall of Fame. Maybe there should be another honor for originality and innovation. I thought the Moody Blues were already in. Some of those on the list I never heard of. Who's the nun?

People get way too hung up on the term "rock 'n roll"

Bonnie Rait, Johnny Cash, Prince, Michael Jackson, and the Bee Gees are in this HoF, and i do not think rock 'n roll is what comes to mind for any of those guys.

My guess is regardless of the origins, if an act has enough songs that cross into the pop billboard charts, they are prolly gonna get put into the hall of fame, so acts like bruno mars is a lock to one day be in the rock 'n roll HoF.

daegog the difference is they were crossover artists from other genres (country, R&B or whatever) or straight pop which is rock’s more popular cousin.

Yeah, there are a ton of folks in there that I wouldn't consider rock 'n roll but that's just how these things are.

What is the criteria for nomination?  I can't see Rufus or LL Cool J being anywhere near Rock and Roll.

What the heck is wrong with The Moody Blues?
I haven't even heard of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Zombies, Link Wray, Rufus featuring Chaka Kahn, The Meters or MC5.
I'm shocked that The Moody Blues aren't already inducted.

oobaka 15 studio albums, one soft rock hit (Nights in White Satin).

No one has ever uttered the sentence, "Let's start a band with a Moody Blues feel."

fancylad Fancy, you’re showing your age, or lack of it by asking why the Moody Blues should be in it.
