The Amphicar: Boat By Water, Car By Land

If any car needs a comeback...

Why didn't the Amphicar take off? It was a genius idea out of Germany and marketed to the US, but it seems like car development went backwards when they were discontinued (it was made from 1961 to 1965).

Only 3,878 were manufactured from 1961 to 1955 -- apparently is was a cumbersome transition from car to boat and back, but who cares? It was awesome.

Looks like a boat on land and looks like a car in the water.

In picture #4? You can see the terror in the children's eyes! O_O

It was advertised as going 65/6 for speed, but reality was more like 45/4. It was scary on the highway and slow in the water. And rusted quickly like spanz mentioned.

Otherwise it was a nifty little car! No way they could market that now though, too many laws and regulations :p

They were quirky and a great idea but ultimately of little use to the vast majority of the driving population. I don't think car development went backwards when they stopped making these.

these things were so cool.  but they were poorly engineered, and all rusted out quickly due to the use of the wrong steel for the body

spanz I guess this thing was invented before Ziebart.

Not to mention that in addition to parking lot dings now you have barnicles to worry about.
