mentott510 It's edgier, grittier than the usual Star Trek. Not everyone gets along like in the other shows. Hated the 1st 2 episodes but the second 2 started to pick up.  I'd say worth the $5 a month subscription. Until re-runs then I cancel

I really like it but more importantly how did other people feel about other Star Treks when they first came out.

Star Trek: TNG:

The Globe and Mail (Toronto)
John Haslett Cuff

The ... special effects are impressive enough and the cast is likeable, so maybe it will catch on with new and old fans. But for character development and true excitement, Bowling for Dollars is more interesting. [1 Oct 1987]

The New York Times
John J. O'Connor

On this initial voyage, the Enterprise and its new crew simply fail to take flight. [5 Oct 1987]

Star Trek: DS9

Newsday
Marvin Kitman

It's not as good as "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The premiere strikes me as a "Star Trek: The De-generation." It doesn't seem to go beyond where no "Star Trek" has gone before, or even where the other one had been creatively. [7 Jan 1993]

Star Trek: Voyager

Boston Herald
Monica Collins

The cast around Mulgrew is excellent. ... Mulgrew, however, drags it all down. Starfleet commanders are not supposed to be this dull, stiff and joyless. As a woman, she's all cardboard and mannish. [16 Jan 1995]

Star Trek: TOS

Star Trek, a science fiction opus centering around a mammoth spaceship, is so absurd it is almost entertaining, what with a Playboy bunny-type waitress.

Star Trek is, frankly, weird. But the costumes and visual effects are right out of the old Frankenstein movies. It's a shocker baby -- if you're easily shocked.

Watchers with some idea of how good science fiction drama can be will just have to wait, it appears, until TV science fiction, too, comes of age.

Everytime a new Star Trek series comes out there is always huge criticisms.  Let it get on it's feet and develop some characters.  Give it a chance before hating on it.

The tech feels far too disjointed from the original franchise. I have decided to just ignore the dumbass politicking. (Why can't we keep current politics out of entertainment? ) I liked it so far, but overall, The Orville and Dark Matter are much better than Discovery. And you don't have to pay extra to see them.

Noticed a funny mention of star trek the other day: How come Worf got his ass kicked by literally EVERY alien STNG came across.

For a tough guy, he wasn't very tough.

Oh and, the biggest issue I have with this is forcing the US to pay to watch on CBS...bullshit.  All other regions can watch it on Netflix, which is what I am doing via VPN.

squidbush I'm into the streams as of late, or VPNing it.  Torrents take to long and get tracked, rip streams are a decent alternative as long as you know the non-spam\pop-up sites.

Personally, I'm lovin it.  It's a tad slow, and character development is also slow - but given they are trying to introduce a whole slew of people into what everyone _expects_ to feel familiar that is hardly surprising.

There is some good talent, some of the twists are a little signposted but other than that I'm good with it.  Frankly though, I very much enjoy the rebooted film franchise and can appreciate good sci fi for what it is.  I'm not so immersed into Star Trek that I cannot forgive deviations from established history.  I'm enjoying it as a show for what it is.

On a related note, because it was mentioned, I'm very much enjoying Orville.  Of course  there are niggles and frankly if Seth ask Alara to open this jar of pickles one more time I might have to do something unpleasant...

I just watched the 4th ep last night and my honest opinion is that it wasn't until the last 20 min of that ep that they finally did something Star Trek.  I was about to turn it off and be done with it for good.

First 2 eps I felt Brian Fuller's presence but I also felt the Studio influence that pushed him out.  I actually don't mind what they did with the Klingon redesign, they feel more alien.  And I think the story could have benefited if it was told solely from their perspective, and I hate subtitles.  But I had no feeling toward anyone in Star Fleet, least alone Michael.  Only  Saru had some good character building and continues to.

EP 3 was kind of like Far Point.  It was painful to watch but sets the real story up.  The cheesy Alien like away team was too much shaky cam and flashing lights for my taste.  Definitely forcing the Spock tease still with the Alice reference and his mother.  Kind of lame to set that up so quick.

All in all, I'll check out ep 5 to see if I want to continue at this point.  Besides, Luca gets to hang out with the classic Mudd.

I just finished watching episode 3 (or 4, if we count the 2hr premiere as two episodes).

Not bad, I think it's starting out stronger than DS9, and I thought that got pretty good after awhile.

I think I already prefer it over most of Voyager, and much of Enterprise.

I'm hopeful.

In a fight with all 6 Captains {Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer, Luca}
I'd say Luca would win because that bastard would shoot them in the back before the others got started

Gerry1of1 Are we talking a straight on fist fight here or captains fighting with their crew on ships of equal strength?  Entirely different questions.

For the first one, Kirk, hands down.  He was the bad ass.

For the second, Picard.  Almost no question.

waldo863 We're talkin' One-on-One, Mano y Mano.  "On the count of 3 come out fighting"....Luca would shoot on the count of 1

Ships - Picard. Enterprise D or E had stronger shields and firepower.

Gerry1of1 If Luca shot on the count of 1, he would be disqualified and Kirk would win.  Instead of mano y mano go on 3, I picture it more like a gladiatorial fight, gates raise, they both enter arena at same time.  Kirk will win.

waldo863 Luca doesn't care about rules. He'd walk away and Spock would have to go back in time to prevent Kirk's death. Then Luca would shoot Spock. Luca is not a nice guy.

Gerry1of1 Luca definitely fights dirty, but if we are going with all captains, I gotta go with Alexander Marcus from Into Darkness.  I FUCKING HATED that movie, but I have to say, that dude was ruthless.  If that movie was about him and not a Khan remake it might of been good.

I didn't like the first episode at all, haven't seen the others.

The notion that the first officer would act like that seems absurd.

daegog ^THIS^  if they actually expect us to PAY to watch the follow on episodes, the first one had better be SOOOO FRIGIN GOOD that we can not wait for the next.  but it stunk, the captain was feckless and some weak PC version of a captain.

MAYBE someday if i find a way to watch for free, i will watch a few more....for now...it is not even in my memory anymore

daegog i didnt like it either, but i just kept telling myself she was raised vulcan. logic over rules federation regulation. if she had fired on the klingons, she may have saved many lives. but of course this is just a tv show and its up to the writers what happens and we cant really say what could or shouldve happened, its just a fictional universe. but were talking about it so in a way thats a win for star trek.

Dorky Star Trek fan here and I give it

Not great, but potential to improve.
First season of Star Trek Next Generation sucked, too.

Love & Hate.  In an attempt to be different that other Star Trek shows they've made it so different I'm not sure it still is Star Trek. They're trying so hard to be edgy the strain of the effort shows.

Characters are stereotypes
Militant female
Tyrannical captain
Nerdy engineer

Love
I love 3 characters. Micheal, Capt Luca & Lt Saru
Love the uniforms and badges
Love the 8 foot tardigrade

Hate
I hate the klingons speaking in klingon. I'm tired of the subtitles.
Mutiny premise is stupid.
Set 50 years before the original show the technology is way more advanced.

Gerry1of1 I agree with this assessment.  I kind of get the tech more advanced thing, but that is an odd one to get around.  You either go full on alternate future like Blade Runner 2048 and stick with the cannon (like Atari and Pan Am still being a thing) or you update the tech to meet our current technical arch.  What we perceived in the 60s as advanced now looks silly or more accurately modern, they had to update the tech to feel like the future, TOS is dated in that aspect.

Gerry1of1 ive only seen the first two episodes, and i completely agree with what you say from what ive seen so far. i havent met captain luca or michael yet, but saru is awesome, and so is the guy who plays him. and i also the love uniforms and badges. but about the klingons speaking in klingon, come on man! it helps to immerse the audience in the world and getting people to read a little bit more doesnt hurt, or are you just having trouble reading the small words on the tv in your old age? and also about the technology thing, that will always happen when you make a prequel to something made in the past but set in the future, its like comparing the prometheus (2012) to the nostromo from alien (1979). sure one can argue that the nostromo was just a simple commercial starfreighter, and the prometheus was the most advanced starship ever constructed, but still.

robthelurker  the Michael Burnham character is a re-boot of the Tom Paris character on Voyager. Remember Janeway had to get him out of prison and he had to earn the trust of the new crew.

thezigrat Seems to be a common them among Star Trek series.  First season is always bad as the actors and writers themselves are still probably figuring out the characters.  Can make for a jumbled mess as the viewers are trying to figure them out and they change a bit.  Seems most Star Trek Series really don't hit their stride until season 3 or 4, which is why I was so disappointed Enterprise ended so quickly.

Hopefully, for Discovery, this is the same.  Bad/Terrible first season, but hits it's stride and gets good by season 4.  I may just hold off on watching it until I can binge through a couple seasons based on what I have heard so far.

melcervini Have not watched Discovery yet, but LOVE The Orville.  Great show and totally not what I was expecting.  I was kind of expecting it to be full on parody, and there is a bit of that, but it has enough of the serious elements as well to make it a very enjoyable show, albeit quiet a bit more lighthearted that the best Star Treks.

Total garbage.  I saw the first episode and part of the second.  It's only star trek in name, and nothing else.  They really messed it up again by forcing another 'reboot/origin' on us.  The recent star trek movies i consider insanity and not part of the star trek universe, but they could have so easily broke free from that by setting a show 200-300 years after voyager.  But no, they messed it up again trying to squeeze into an origin story, shattering the timeline, and just making an affront to the star trek universe.
