Closed For Good: A Final Look Inside Tent City [Photos]

Submitted by: fancylad 1 week ago in News & Politics

This past weekend Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone finally closed Tent City, former Sheriff Joe Arpaio's notorious open-air jail, for good, just months shy of its 25th anniversary.

Tent City, Maricopa County’s infamous outdoor jail, quietly closed for business this weekend. Its remaining inmates were taken from the 7-acre compound in southwest Phoenix late Saturday night and checked into the county's Durango Jail a few blocks away.

Tent City was the brainchild of former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who opened it in 1993 to combat overcrowding in brick-and-mortar facilities.

Why was everyone so upset about the tent jail? Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan live in tents and it's hotter there than it is in Arizona.  And on very hot days they were not required to work.

It is an affordable solution to overpopulated jails.

Okay, now I'll get attacked by you-know-who

Should you be punished for DUI? ABSOLUTELY!

Should you be tortured for weeks? No.

megrendel I live in phoenix man. Can you imagine spending all day in 115 degree heat? Trying to sleep? During the cooler months fine, but Phoenix is not the place to make people live outside without air conditioning. For Fucks Sake, you can get fined for animal cruelty for leaving your DOG outside in the summer here.
