Masked Open-Carry Advocate Arrested After Carrying Rifle Into Police Station

Submitted by: daegog 2 weeks ago in News & Politics

Two men were arrested Sunday after they entered the Dearborn Police Department openly carrying firearms. One of the men wore a black mask and bullet-resistant vest and a had a military-style rifle slung over his shoulder, according to police.

The incident was live-streamed on Facebook and later posted on YouTube (which you can see up above). Before entering, the man filming says in the video they intended to file a complaint claiming they were "illegally pulled over" an hour prior. "We felt a little afraid for our lives when we were pulled over, so we figured we better protect ourselves," he says.

The name associated with the Facebook live stream is James V. Baker, an open-carry advocate who has organized numerous open-carry walks in Detroit and other cities with an organization he helped create named the Hell's Saints.

Here's their arraignment:

Is there a Constitutional right to wear masks? Unless it's October 31st doesn't wearing a mask mean either it's really cold out or you are doing something illegal?

Shelworth That surprised me too. I doubt it's against a law to wear a full mask while carrying around high-powered rifles around town, but if I saw these guys from a couple hundred feet, I'd assume they're terrorists and I should expect a hail of gunfire at any minute.

You have to hand it to the officers for not shooting at masked men who are armed.
Shows amazing restraint.

As a gun owner the productive way to start a conversation with someone who is anti gun is to invite them to the range.  Show them what you actually do with your gun.  Because it isn't this or any out the other bs you hear about in the news.

Gotta start with the obligatory I'm a gun owner.  If you are law enforcement or security then yeah open carry you need access, but anyone else that thinks it is a good idea to open carry anything is an idiot. I don't like their message, I don't like their tactics, and I don't like getting lumped in with them.  they are trying to provoke people and most say to start a conversation the problem is it provokes in exactly the wrong way to start a productive conversion . If someone doesn't want a gun they shouldn't be forced to have one.  if someone wants a gun isn't a violent idiot AND they are going to obey the laws with it then they should be able to have one. BUT it isn't a fucking toy and regardless of what they say their intent is to provoke a response and that's just fucked and counter productive for responsible gun owners.

geobas1 Yeah, you mention these weapons not being toys -- I feel similar, I feel like these guys were using heavy artillery as props. Not an intelligent message, especially since this stunt could have easily gotten someone mistakenly killed.

geobas1 I actually had a friend make a compelling argument for a specific open-carry scenario he had lived.  He bicycled through some bad neighborhoods fairly regularly at one point and had been messed with while doing so until he started open-carrying his pistol on his hip.  It's not like he could let his guard down though, he had to continue to remain vigilant because now he went from a fairly safe target of unknown profitability to a dangerous target of known profitability, but he was not messed with again.

Once his circumstances changed he stopped open-carrying regularly, as there was no need to attract that sort of attention to himself.  His open-carry is basically now limited to situations when firearms are to be used, like hunting or at the range.

twx agreed.  I knew a guy that deer hunted with a .357, by law while hunting he had to open carry you are not allowed to concealed carry on the woods while hunting.

Myself I wouldn't ever carry open if you are in an area like you talk about imo while it makes it unlikely the run of the mill assholes are going to mess with you, if you do actually meet the guy you'd really need the gun for it just makes it more likely he'll shoot you outright and take your gun. The guy that's actually prepared to take your life now just has more reason to target you and just shoot outright.

Basically I was taught/trained that for a civilian a gun is going to do one of two things.  It will either end the situation absolutely or it will escalate the situation and make it worse.  This makes the best course to not let anyone know you have a gun until you pull it, and if you do pull it you put three rounds center mass.  If you are justified in pulling it you are justified in using it.  If you are not justified in using it you are not justified in pulling it.

geobas1 Basically it was run of the mill assholes, or bangers that hadn't quite gotten to the level of homicide.  Kind of people that would pass slowly in a car to evaluate if they were going to harass the person.  When they saw the pistol they just drove on.

geobas1 everyone needs to read and understand this^  once that gun comes out the situation is pretty much escalated past the point of no return.  The two remaining options are shoot or run.  And if you are in an area where you think you need a gun, you're in the wrong neighborhood.

squrlz4ever nothing would make me happier than to see these two dipshits convicted of a felony so they lose their rights to gun ownership, they've proven they don't have the mental capacity to make responsible decisions regarding their firearms.  Then everyone can stop thinking they represent me in some way.

geobas1 Hear hear! The best thing responsible gun owners can do to safeguard their gun rights is to call out the irresponsible jerks. I'm not a gun person and meeting intelligent gun owners like you and Mel makes a big, positive impact on my views of the issue.

melcervini Sure, but somewhere down the line guns go from legal owners to illegal owners or someone who legally own a gun that probably shouldn't like a bad driver with a license or an alcoholic, that's the real problem. It's like teenage drinking or drunk driving, how do we prevent it?

mischeif954 the REAL problem are violent habitual criminals being turned back out into the public, not the tools they use.  Its already illegal for them to be NEAR a firearm much less possess one. Criminals don't care about laws.  Chicago's murder rate speaks for itself, and they have some of the toughest gun laws on the books.  Making something illegal or hard to obtain legally, has NO effect on a criminal intent on doing harm.  i.e.  Meth and Heroin are illegal too.   Bottom line the individual is responsible for his/her actions.  Not the 'tool' used in the process.  A drunk is going to drive if he makes that choice and no law is going to stop him.

melcervini agreed.  At one point when ammo was cheap my dad and I were buying lots but had little time to shoot. We counted 20,000 rounds of various calibers at one point and that wasn't the high, just when we counted.  Went thru all that long ago and have had to buy much more and not one person was shot or threatened at any point in the process.

daegog ridiculous.  This isn't the middle-east.  Its impractical as hell to carry a long-gun for protection.  This is just trying to show off... in front of cops... masked...  jackasses.
