New AI Can Guess Whether You're Gay Or Straight From A Photo

Submitted by: trimble 1 month ago in Science Tech

An excerpt from The Guardian: The study from Stanford University – which found that a computer algorithm could correctly distinguish between gay and straight men 81% of the time, and 74% for women – has raised questions about the biological origins of sexual orientation, the ethics of facial-detection technology and the potential for this kind of software to violate people’s privacy or be abused for anti-LGBT purposes.

The machine intelligence tested in the research, which was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and first reported in the Economist, was based on a sample of more than 35,000 facial images that men and women publicly posted on a US dating website. The researchers, Michal Kosinski and Yilun Wang, extracted features from the images using “deep neural networks”, meaning a sophisticated mathematical system that learns to analyze visuals based on a large dataset.

The research found that gay men and women tended to have “gender-atypical” features, expressions and “grooming styles”, essentially meaning gay men appeared more feminine and vice versa. The data also identified certain trends, including that gay men had narrower jaws, longer noses and larger foreheads than straight men, and that gay women had larger jaws and smaller foreheads compared to straight women.

For the most part it's obvious on people.

<sigh> or folks that post their images to a dating site make sure that certain signals are present.  The sample data was poisoned.

While it's interesting to see what new technology can do, I fail to see any sensible, real world reason to use something like this.

This is an interesting and provocative study. It weakens the argument of the far-right conservatives who say gay people choose to be gay, yes? I would think?

Where's 5Cats? He's always saying gay people choose to be gay. He needs to weigh in here.

squrlz4ever I don't understand how the choice question is still an issue; even if it is a choice, the freedom to make these choices are a ducking right.

squrlz4ever They do choose to be gay.  There are only two options.  1. be gay.  2 do not be gay.

there's only one sure fire way to tell if someone is gay.  However is this computer only classifying people as gay or straight? Or is it including Bi, Poly, Asexual etc?

lockner01 "There's only one sure fire way to tell if someone is gay."

Ask him what color you should paint your living room walls, then consult chart below.

  • 10 words of fewer: Straight
  • 11-50 words: Bicurious
  • 51-250 words: Gay
  • More than 250 words: "Look out, honey, I am fabulous!"

I think I would pass undetected. I just have the big European nose.

stifler But could it distinguish between cum and the leftovers of a sloppy tuna sandwich?

insaneai Presumably.

Unless they wanked off into the sandwich because they are to poor to buy real mayo.

Or perhaps they just got the urge and didnt have a sock handy.

Or maybe their grandma just doesn't swallow..

Hmmmm. "a computer algorithm could correctly distinguish between gay and straight men 81% of the time"

I mean, statistically, I can create a program that can beat that. Roughly 95% of Americans are straight. So my program would just always guess straight and be right 95% of the time.

holygod the test where it did well was where it was choosing the gay person from a set of two people, where one was known to be gay.

fancylad Well gallup says 3.8% of Americans identify as LGBT.

In fact here is an article about how Americans drastically overs etimate the percentage of the population that is gay:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/183383/americans-greatly-overestimate-percent-gay-lesbian.aspx

You live in southern California man. That isn't exactly a great representative sampling for this particular issue.

doiknowyou Ya. I suppose that's fair. Although in this day and age I don't see any reason why someone would lie on an anonymous poll unless they themselves don't think they are gay.

holygod I dunno, i never really consider polls to be anonymous these days, even tho most online polls probably aren't sending things to your pc to find out your name.
