Apple Unveils New iPhones 8, 8 Plus, And X

Submitted by: fancylad 1 week ago in Tech

Earlier today, Apple introduced a new line of smartphones in the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X. CEO Tim Cook's presentation lasted hours, but the guy in the video above boiled EVERYTHING down to just the specs and details.

The 8-series phones will be feature glass on both the front and back, have wireless charging available, and water resistant technology. Both the 8 and the 8 Plus will be available on Sept. 22.

Additionally, the company announced the iPhone X (pronounced "ten," executives wanted to make clear) to honor the tenth anniversary of Apple’s famed smartphone. The X -- which will be high-priced and limited-run -- will not feature a home button and will use facial-recognition technology to unlock it. "[The X] is the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone," CEO Tim Cook said. It has a *cough* $1,000 price tag.

Facial recognition? Jeez, when are we going to get the blood and saliva-activated phone?

I can't wait until phones are designed for durability and function, not for glossy looks.

I like that phones push the tech bounds, in particular size/hardware tricks ratio.

But am I the only one that thinks, its just a phone.  Phones still cannot do what I need (CAD/spreadsheets etc), and even if it can - it is completely inconvenient.

Great - it can play games and make phonecalls. Camera is nice.

If you dont use your phone for anything important other than calls, then you wouldnt care about face recog - and you wouldnt give a shit about the cops unlocking it!!!!

But I'd like face recog on my front door, in conjunction with thumb or rfid.

stifler same, i use my phone for contacting people, storing the grocery list, and taking the odd snapshot, maybe calculating something, or for the time/stopwatch.  But i agree, it's way more convenient on a computer to do things like 3d graphics, 2d graphics, spreadsheets, documents, databases, development, games, and the full web experience.  The phone is just too feeble to do all that conveniently.

Someone once said to me "you should do graphics on the phone" i was just shaking my head.  It's nowhere near the capabilities of a full graphics editor on a computer.

I think its really smart.  People who still have iphones buy it for the logo, might as well gouge the shit out of them to make them feel even more "elite"

prichards114 I agree on the phones and overpriced issues.  I use a mac book quite a bit, and it's not bad, but i would never make it my main computer, because PC is where it's at.  I also can't stand apple's 'special' 'control' and 'command' keys, they should use the "alt" and "ctrl" as they are standardized on PC.  Take that gap between the alt/ctrl and make it the 'apple logo key' like windows did the windows logo.   Apple is absolutely ridiculous with key combos, for example to get a screenshot it's like 3 keys, but to get a screen clip it's like shift+command+option+4 to get a box selector (4 buttons reeks of poor planning).  Also it's a pain to switch to PC after using mac, (or vice versa),  and make a few mistakes figuring out the cut n' paste combo, and it's annoying.  Even plugging in a standard keyboard doesn't help apple much in this respect.  I know the keys can be programmed but that's just lame too.  I like having backspace, delete (that works as delete should), end, home, pgup, pgdn, prn scr, pause/break, so that's why i plug in a standard PC keyboard to use it, but those lame duck keys on the bottom row on the sides of the space really annoy me with apple.

prichards114 I agree about the iphone. However, without the iphone we might not have the galaxy, pixel, etc.

Mac laptops are worth it in my opinion. I've used high end laptops for 15 years and I've never had a better laptop than a mac.
