Why The Man Who Punched Kangaroo to Save His Dog Faces Backlash In Australia

Submitted by: daegog 2 months ago in News & Politics

Come at be, bro!

Kangaroos are vicious, I think the guy (Greg Tompkins, also a veterinarian) was just trying to startle it to keep it from attacking him and his dog, but that's not stopping Australia from wanting to make him pay for punching one of "Australia's icons."

Kangaroos here in Australia are like deer in the US. There's plenty of them all over the place, and they're occasionally hunted for food and sometimes even culled to reduce numbers. People who live in areas with kangaroos don't find them particularly mystical, but city-dwellers who don't go out to the country get all reverent and hushed when they see one.

I couldn't help but notice that the segment didn't actually say what any of the 'backlash' was, and the one expert who criticised it was saying "you don't want to agitate the animal, because it can cause fatal wounds" (and it can). He wasn't saying "leave the poor animal alone"

The short form is this: every year there's somewhere in Australia where these animals are getting culled. Compared to that, punching one on the snout once is nothing.

barry9a yeah, is a good point. These people aren't above making up some fake backlash bullshit, this guy dealt with an insane situation really well.

I love the look on the Kangaroos face after the guy slapped him it was like "what are you stupid come on back I'll show you a thing or two"

This was pretty old news. The video went viral, and iirc the vast majority of the backlash was from overseas, mainly due to melodramatic reporting such as this clip.

Roos are delicious, but vicious.

They act like he tazered it multiple times.  He punched the kangaroo just enough to make it back off him and the dog.  Ass hole roo had it coming.

the kangaroo looks baffled, pretty funny. From wht ive heard the kangaroo in australia are like deer everywhere else. Ive been told that they hunt and eat some of them.
Punching one in the face to save your dog shouldnt be a big deal.

daegog In a word: Dingos. Kangaroos will eviscerate a dingo using it's hind claws. They've also been known to lure one into a body of water, grab it by the back of the head and force it under water, drowning it. Roos don't play.

Gotta do what ya gotta do.  I don't fault him one bit.  Kudos to our Aussie brothers.  We just punch bears here.

Gerry1of1 I'm a lover of all things alive. Don't eat animals. Even saved a bug that was drowning in my cat's water dish today and I say that roo had it coming.
I doubt, very much, the guy did any damage to the roo.

Gerry1of1 Yeah, that's what I don't get either.  I don't want people punching kangaroos, but I think it's better that it got punched than the dog getting choked.

Typical ignorance. I love the Inside Edition Commentator says "Knocking the Kangaroo out...." Then he states Later "He Punches..." Then as if we didn't hear him, he clings to "When he slaps the animal..........."  No where did the animal get knocked out, col cocked or beaten. Another reminder our society lives for drama at any turn....Please God when do the protest begin???

He should have just grabbed his dog and moved backed away from the kangaroo.
Really?  Did he miss the part where the kangaroo was choking the dog to death?  You think a humans strength is gonna just pull the dog away from the kangaroo? Now true, he approached and the kangaroo let go of the dog and turned to him.  At that point, what should he have done?  Run away?  Humans run about 28MPH, Kangaroos can run at about 44MPH.  Yeah, that's a smart move too huh?

I love all animals and I hate the thought of any of them being hurt.  But, having said that, there is nothing and no one I wouldn't take down to save my dog.  A Kangaroo is nothing to mess with, and the guy is lucky he didn't get seriously injured, but I wouldn't fault him for actions, assuming the story is true as it is presented.  Now, if he and his dog were out there taunting the Kangaroo, it might be a different story.
