China Tells North Korea That They’re On Their Own If They Fire Against The US

Submitted by: fancylad 2 months ago in News & Politics
Chang Wanquan, Minister of Defense of the People's Republic of China.

The Washington Post is reporting that Chinese Defense Ministry indicated today that it would not come to North Korea's aid if the they instigate a fight with the United States, but they would step in if the U.S. strikes first in a conflict. China's position was made in an editorial in state-run The Global Times newspaper and is considered “semi-official,” analysts say.

"If North Korea launches missiles that threaten U.S. soil first and the U.S. retaliates, China will stay neutral,” said the editorial. “If the U.S. and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so."

Thoughts on how many countries get involved with this before it's all said and done?

China hasn't "just joined in". China is the whole reason why there's a North Korea in the first place. The US was winning the war in Korea and was approaching the Chinese border. Cooler heads said "let's stop here"  - China was very nervous about having an American puppet state right on its borders, or even that the US might cross the border and continue with an invasion of China. But hotter heads decided to force the combat right to the border. This triggered China joining in and fighting the US to a stalemate.

China has always been there, backing up NK just like the US backs up SK. China is the whole reason why the US hasn't "Iraq'd" NK in 60-odd years.

barry9a This was a great, informative comment. I love it when people bring in some historical background. Thanks, Barry.

barry9a I see NK as China's military sand box. They know what they can get away with and try new offensive weapons.

Question is... is NK outgrowing its benefactor?

toetagmodel2 NK cannot exist as a nation state today without china.  They are quite literally supplying the entire country with everything.  China, like Israel, pays no attention to UN mandated sanctions and edicts when they don't want to.

THANK GOD FOR CHINA, everyone go back to doing whatever, the war is off.

Kim will never fire at guam first and China just made Trump look like a massive bitch.  Kim can say whatever the fuck he wants now, and Trump cannot do anything because there is no way he will risk a nuclear confrontation with China.

Now, Kim has the greenlight for a permanently open mic.  He can carry on spouting bullshit like a drunk uncle at a wedding and Trump can't do a single fucking thing.

China just cucked the hell out of your POTUS America!  Deal with it.

bill_watson but yea this is the first time ive ever been proud of china lol. Also trump has a massive ego, China making those statements could make trump follow through with his claims that they will strike korea if they keep threatening, he could pull a bat shit crazy and attack anyways, thus fucking everyone into WWIII.

Also, only the fucking idiots in this country believe in Trump. A vast majority, an overwhelming amount actually never wanted to see his rich white ass in a seat of power. Especially asking three separate times in a U.N. conference or convfefe as he calls it, "why he couldn't just nuke the middle east."

daegog Shut up, antagonizing this redneck ass backward ass country is not a way to promote the way humanity needs to act. Nationalities as an ideology is a fucking plague. Not just the U.S. Not just N.K. Fucking, everyone. That includes me, that includes you. This species is shit, all around. Deal with it.

rb82a1a He's right though, people need to get out, gather in numbers, chant 4 simple words:
  1. death
  2. to
  3. the
  4. presidency
then persist, win, and instill new governance that doesn't lead to the same mistakes currently happening.

daegog So now, there will still be nothing done about his giant thorn in the worlds side.  Nothing at all.  and you say thank god?  Something needs to be done about North Korea eventually and something will be done eventually.  This is just delaying the inevitable and I fail to see how this is a good thing.

waldo863 I agree completely.  It's not as if this is an issue that just developed out of nowhere.  Trump is antagonizing them, which is not a good thing, but regardless, we've known it was coming.  NK must be dealt with somehow.  A conflict does seem inevitable; I don't know how this can possibly be resolved without war.  That doesn't mean I support a war, just that it's a real mess we're in.  We can't go in there with conventional war without pricking China. The only way is if NK strikes first.  And I do believe that they will at some point.  If Trump doesn't react to their taunts, they'll believe they are far more powerful than they are, and eventually they will do something bad...  I think there is no good answer to this situation, and China's involvement is no great relief.

cjeffblanchr You realize you are stating there's no way around a Nuclear Holocaust because that's what you are setting up as an Expectation.  How about the option of Acceptance, accept  that this backwards ass country has a nuke and we should treat them better than the shitstains they are?

normalfreak2 I'm saying confrontation is inevitable.  It doesn't have to be nuclear.  How do you think the situation should be dealt with?

cjeffblanchr I honestly do not know, but if I had to choose, it would be Acceptance.  I do not believe conflict is inevitable.  North Korea doesn't have a Navy, Doesn't have an Air Force.  They do not have enough nukes to destroy America.  The one variable I cannot account for is Kim Jong Un.  Is he really crazy? if so conflict may in fact be inevitable.

If conflict is inevitable their will be a nuclear holocaust.  Tens of millions will be killed, that's a ridiculous number of people.  Think about that...this is a dangerous situation that is not helped by having a penis comparing contest that Trump is instigating.   This is cowboy diplomacy.

normalfreak2 Yeah, it's a bad situation, truly if Kim Jong Un is bat-crap crazy.  I really don't disagree with you on anything.  And you know, for me it's not just about the millions of deaths that would result, but also all the suffering that would come to survivors.

waldo863 "thorn in the world's side" is not who you are implying it is, that is reserved for the terrorist regime that resides in that nation south of Canada, and north of Mexico.

He's not a thorn; he's all noise and bluster, bark but no bite (at least not one he's used on his neighbours).

If the world's press didn't give him the airtime then we probably wouldn't be where we are now .. with him and POTUS squabbling like toddlers.

waldo863 Saddam Hussein did that in Iraq. It turned out he didn't have weapons of mass destruction after all, and look at the mess we're now in because of the action that was taken.

agurney Yeah, but in this case they DO have nuclear reactors.  They DO have the ability to make nukes.  As far back as 1994 they had a nuclear reactor and were building two more.  They have also launched test missiles a few times.  This is not the same situation.

waldo863 Don't you see it?  WE are the reason these little countries want nukes.  Syria has no nukes, so when they did something the US didn't like they got 50 cruise missiles shot at them.

Countries that have nukes DO NOT GET cruise missiles shot at them.

we need a second military just for folks like you waldo.  People who "think something about some rando dictator needs to be done", YOU guys go take care of that shit.  I do not want a single american soldier to die because Trump is butthurt.
