This Is A Battle For The Future Of The Internet

Submitted by: daegog 4 months ago in News & Politics Tech

Trump’s FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai (you've read about him on IAB here and here), has a plan that would destroy the legal foundation for net neutrality, the principle that all content on the Internet be treated equally. This means that, if Pai has his way, companies like Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast would be able to control what we see and do online. They could throttle, block, and censor content, as well as charge us extra fees to access the websites we want.

That’s why groups as varied as Fight For the Future, the ACLU, Netflix, Amazon, Demand Progress, OKCupid, and The Nation are joining forces today in a massive, internet-wide day of action to save net neutrality.

From Battle For The Net: Comcast, Verizon and AT&T want to end net neutrality so they can charge extra fees to control what we see & do online. Today, the internet takes the first step to stop them. This is a battle for the Internet's future. Before you do anything else, send a letter to the FCC & Congress now!

Argument against Net neutrality:  The ISPs built the networks, they own it and pay for access to the poles to run their lines like all other utilities.  They should be able to sell access to those networks as they see fit; after all it is their property.

Argument for Net neutrality:  I am paying for unrestricted access to the internet, restricting my bandwidth based on the type of content I choose to access is a breach of contract.

So it comes down to which customer is more important.

Life has few guarantees, but one of them is that the Trump administration doesn't give 2 shits for your opinion. They will do whatever the hell they want.

I like that this seems to be something both liberal and conservative people in my life can get behind.

cobrakiller This shouldn't be a partisan issue.  This affects us all the same, unless you happen to own a large business and be exceedingly wealthy then it doesn't =p  I assume we are all people that make 6 figures or less a year.

normalfreak2 You know as well as I do that people can make any issue partisan.

Even a lot of larger companies are unhappy with this.  This will affect their business online.

cobrakiller more importantly educational institutions, especially middle and high schools.  They want to limit access to the internet by forcing those who need access to pay more, especially those who cannot afford it.

Stupid public = Easily controlled

Maybe we can all agree on this one?

Even Pornhub.com is getting in on the act.  They have slowed their streams today to show how it will be once net neutrality is gone and the cable pimps exert full control.

I tested pornhub 4 times today just to make sure!  Yup, its slow as fuck.

daegog Really?  I'm honestly curious, is that why Netflix load times have been lacking since the announcement of this agenda 2 months ago?  I have noticed that when clicking on an item, it takes 30 - 60+ seconds to display the play symbol, where as it was instantaneous before.

Fuck you Comcast
